Macronomicon is almost three years old now, hatched on the open-mic writing website Royal Road. The pen name burst from the cocoon of blissful ignorance and deposited his first humble contribution into the world of writing, tired and sticky, yet satisfied. Content in the knowledge his work would be warmly received by thousands of potential fans, and more importantly…friends.

The first comment was, “Can you, I don’t know, make the main character less stupid?”

That was sobering.

Macronomicon has no actual weight, because he is a pen name, and while his existence is ephemeral, he does have a presence, often stalking the back-channels of Discord like a novelty vampire, waiting to suck nourishing creativity out of unfortunate* fans.

Macronomicon has a talent for brainstorming and stringing together disparate ideas into a cohesive story. That talent has been strengthened and built upon to form the foundation of his writing career. He once outlined the plot (quality notwithstanding) of an entire book from start to finish in a tiny room with nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, Pepsi and B.O.**

It’s all the same things that made the first books great. Interesting and convoluted(in a good way) plots that keep you guessing. Always satisfying without too much handwaving.

The MC is basically a more paranoid and sarcastic version of Doctor Who with much cooler companions. Of course, Smartass remains my favorite, but Borg comes a very close second. Vresh, however, could use some character development.

Stefano Borelli was quite something… the talented mechanic was a truly great character and I so wanted him to find his happy ever after, especially when he watched his boss and saw how happy and settled he was.

Dependable, loyal, protective and family oriented, Stefano was perfect for Gabby. His reaction to her on their first meeting was twofold…. He was happy to help a strangers, as that was just who he was, but it was the spark that lit inside him and the fact he couldn’t stop thinking about her that made him realise she was gonna be important.

I understood her hesitation when it came to the idea that he was interested in her, especially when we discovered where her concerns stemmed from, but all I wished for was her to see that this guy was exactly what he showed her and for her to take a little leap of faith when it came to him. The fact that she was a single mom, with an absolutely adorable little boy definitely added to her hesitation but Theo had no such reservations when it came to the big mechanic and I adored how open and happy he was when it came to Stefano and the rest of the guys at Reynolds Restorations.

I loved the development of their relationship, even when things weren’t quite working out to Stefano’s plans. Having a family, of both blood and choice who were there to help him sort through his feelings and take care of Gabby and Theo kept him from giving up hope when the determined woman thought she was doing the right thing……..

Catching up with Charley and Maxx, meeting the Borelli family (especially Stefano’s mom) and finding out there seems to be something going on between Brett and Charley’s friend rounded out the story so well.

Breaking The Speed Limit was a great read and I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series.
