I LOVE THIS SERIES!

I want to be Mrs. Berns, too! I read all 12 books, one right after the other, and enjoyed all of them. I was laughing out loud at some of Mrs. Berns’ replies and telling my hubby about them. Excellent writing by Jess Lourey. And a wonderful cast of characters. Too many writers will use the same phrases non-stop but this series continued to surprise me with fun descriptions of people, places, and things. About halfway through I decided I needed to look up a Nut Goodie and actually ordered some (Sorry, but I like Butterfingers more.). Although they make for a great gag candy for what they look like out of the package. If there more than 12 of this series, I’d read them. If you want some good entertainment, I definitely recommend reading the Mira James Mystery Series.

Strangely, this is the first book of hers that I’ve read. Now I’ll have to go back and read all the ones leading up to this! I love her sense of humor, her wit, her way with words. She took a sensitive horror of life and turned it into a well thought out mystery and solution. She keeps you on the edge of your seat through all of it. All of her characters are unique and interesting. If I had any criticism, it’s the allergies…I couldn’t understand why it was even in the book as it was just distracting. The rest of the book is fantastic and I highly recommend it.

Bringing it all together

I have followed Mira James from the beginning. While the series started as a “cozy” mystery, the characters and story grew in depth over the years. The final outing is one of the best. The level of humor has always been a delight, but the richness and poignancy of April Fools brought tears.
Read them all. Lourey is real, human, and masterful.

Broke My Heart

SPOILER ALERT!! SPOILER ALERT!!

She ended up with the wrong man. Johnny Goody-Two Shoes. Sure, he’ll “let” her and Mrs. Berns do their cases, but when they get dangerous, he’ll want them to stop. If she’d gone with the Chief of Police, one of the most interesting characters in this sort of fiction in years, they would have had one hell of a lot of great plot points. We could learn new things about Gary and his past. He even looks like her beloved Chief statue. They could have worked cases together, him uneasy about using her, her wanting in on what info he has on everything. He is the man for her. It’s so obvious. Look, I like Johnny, but he really is a wimp. And after Gary wept into her hair. . . How COULD you, Jess!

Look, this is partially tongue in cheek, I loved these books, especially after Kenny and Gary got so interesting, although this last one was not only terribly disappointing from my p.o.v., but just not as well-written as some of the others. (I will review them all eventually and likely give most of them at least 4 stars, some 5. (Especially August. I loved that one, which happened to be the first one I read. May Day was excellent, too, especially since I am familiar with the Minneapolis at that time, and my bf actually lived there in that area.) But lord, lord, could we keep the series going? I imagine there will be some way to get our girl back to Gary . . . Please? LOL
