Okay, but slightly bland

I wanted to love this book, I pre-orderd it and was excited to get it, as I am a huge fan of her blog, but it is oddly bland. It’s all been done before. The recipes are mediocre, the styling is a bit stilted and contrived and some of it is downright impractical ( check beach picnic).
The price was decent, so I am not hugely regretful but feeling underwhelmed at the impact I thought it would have. It’s pretty but not substantive. Momentary and muted eye candy.
Stick with the blog
Sorry Jenni!! I wanted to love it and glad that others do!

A Very Boring Book

I really enjoyed her first book, Pacific Natural, but I am really regretting the purchase of this one. Every page is minimal and beige. They all started to look the same. Not much text. I was so uninspired I quit reading halfway through and will put it on my stack of books to donate.

Beautiful but light on content

I really wanted to love this book but I found it to be a bit lacking. The pictures are beautiful and there are some good recipes in here, but overall not much substance. I was hoping this would be more of a guide to entertaining with lots of tips and some fresh ideas, along with recipes. Instead the book is arranged by season with only a few entertaining/tablescapes based on each season. It lists 5-6 tips for each idea, which I didn’t find to be overly helpful or new (for example things like: “play with varying heights of tapered candles to add a bit of dimension to the table” and “placing flowers and greens directly on the table is a nice way to dress up a casual table”). Fine tips but nothing that hasn’t already been said by 100 other people. I bought this book at a discount so I’m not too upset and it will look nice on my bookshelf since it has a lot of pretty pictures and a nice cover. Would I buy it again? Probably not. Could be good for someone who hasn’t entertained much or is just starting out with a new house or recent grad, but otherwise it’s just kinda meh. Hopefully her next book will have a lot more content and ideas!

I purchased two copies of this book. One for myself and one for a friend. I opened my copy and was extremely disappointed with my purchase. The quality of the writing…blah. The photos are all from Instagram, heavily filtered and completely unoriginal. The printing quality of the book itself, besides the cover, was poorly produced and felt cheap and rushed to production. This book is a big FLOP, all hype, and if I could get my money back for both copies I would.

Beautiful, but so incomplete

This is a beautiful book with some wonderful sounding, and often gluten free! recipes. But the menus for entertaining are sorely lacking. In one, your guests receive a cocktail, loaf of bread, and crostini w/mushrooms, then you send them off with some room spray! In another, the entire meal consisted of a packet of fish! I buy a book on entertaining to learn how to put an entire meal together for a group of people, this book is not that.

All the spaces look the same such that it’s hard to tell where one ends and another begins. I had such high hopes for this book. Sadly, Jenni Kayne did not deliver.

Lovely, but…

First, let me say that like everything Jenni Kayne touches, the book is lovely. I would’ve preferred more of her many profiles of accomplished women, their spaces and “uniforms”. When I called a store and asked about the nature of the book, I was given to understand it to be more in the nature of her blog profiles and less of a millennial Martha. Still lovely though, so I will keep it and watch for another book soon.

I am a HUGE fan of Jenni Kayne, and loved the first book. So, I was very much looking forward to this home edition but unfortunately ended up pretty let down by it. I was expecting the book to be filled with Jenni Kayne designed spaces, including pieces from the home collection (furniture, textiles, etc.), and then like the first book, details/explanation on how to create that look in your own home. Instead, the book is more a compilation of homes that inspire Jenni, but most of them (aside from a few in the book) are actually quite different from what you’d see on the Jenni Kayne social feeds and blog. Overall it felt a bit sterile, bland, and unapproachable. I sadly returned the book and hope future book editions might be more true to the brand.

I love curling up with this book, it’s calming, inspiring and so true to the Jenni Kayne brand which I absolutely love. It also makes a beautiful shelf styling or coffee table piece.
