This is the best non-fiction book I have read in years. It is written by one of the best development economists of our time. It is a masterclass in the origins of conflict. Blatmann writes in a way that makes experts and non-experts alike captivated. Although I recently completed a Ph.D. in economics, I am still amazed by the amount of knowledge one book can provide. Despite not putting in any effort, I gained as much knowledge as a semester’s worth of classwork in conflict. I was immersed in the book the whole time. This book joins Why Nations Fail and Poor Economics as one of the great books on economic development. I would encourage any reader regardless of background to pick up this book.

Definitive source on prolonged violent conflict

The control of violence is one of the central organizing forces of society. Economists and political theorists ranging from Fukuyama, North/Wallace/Weingast, James Scott, and Acemoglu/Robinson have posited well developed theories about how liberal societies (open access orders) have developed in response to the threat of violence. But yet most of developed humanity lives in a state of peace. How does prolonged violent conflict start, and how can it be avoided?
No one is better positioned to address this question than Chris Blattman. “Why We Fight” is filled with compelling stories alongside comprehensive research. This should be required reading for anyone trying to understand modern social order.

Misguided rehash of previous books

I’ve read two of Piketty’s previous books, Capital in the 21st Century, and a Time for Socialism. This seemed like a rehash of both of those books, both in the data presented and the themes. The consistent themes were a 70 to 80 percent progressive income tax, a wealth tax, restrictions on property ownership, basic income, higher inheritance tax. The goal is to get more equality in society. I do think we need to ensure everybody has a fair opportunity in our society, but I believe that his ideas will completely destroy the incentives that make us great. No one will want to work. No one will protect us. Other countries like China and Russia will completely run circles around us. One of his ideas is giving everybody a basic income, free housing, free education, free healthcare, an inheritance, and a job if they wanted. But why would anybody work if given all the things mentioned? Piketty is idealogue. If any of these things were put in practice, we would find them terribly inefficient and ineffective. His plan can really be summed by Bernie Sanders’ platform (Bernie and Elizabeth Warren are big Piketty fans): stop working, tax the productive until they stop working, and let the country go to hell.
