Attributes of Vanishing Asia PDF

This is a 3-volume set of oversize books that span the continent of Asia. Ancient and beautiful traditions in Asia that are rapidly disappearing are recorded here in 9,000 images on 1,000 pages. The author has visited 35 countries in Asia and has travelled to the end of the road in its most remote places to capture the costumes, architecture, festivals, and lifestyles that are vanishing. The diverse cultures range from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east, from Siberia in the north to Indonesia in the south, and everything in between. Volume 1 covers West Asia, Volume 2 Central Asia, and Volume 3 East Asia. Every one of its 1,000 pages is uniquely designed, and every one of its 9,000 images is captioned. This is an ambitious and extreme passion project that the author/photographer has worked on for 49 years. Many of the scenes depicted in the book are now gone from the world, and others are becoming rarer by the day. There is no other book like it. Vanishing Asia PDF

“11 x 4.5 x 16.5 inches”! Buyer beware!
June 2, 2022

This isn’t like a heavy 3 book D&D set. It’s a large format photo print set. Hardcover and heavy. Don’t be surprised if you thought you accidentally ordered a scooter b/c it comes in a big box. The book box is protected further inside, in its original shipping box. And inside that it is further protected with foam corners. And it is still big. “11 x 4.5 x 16.5 inches” Haven’t opened the books yet, b/c it’s my daughters’ July birthday present. But looking forward to it!

What a treasure this trilogy is! Mine just arrived today and I’m already blown away at just the first 50 pages. I consider this an important anthroplogical document in addition to a work of incredible beauty. Please take a bow, Kevin Kelly!

Amazing Book

I have just spend the last hour completely engrossed in the first 20 pages of Kevin Kelly’s new 1000 page masterpiece, Vanishing Asia. The book is monumental, from it’s physical size of 30 pounds, to the scope and scale of it’s content. Mr. Kelly spent 40 years travelling throughout the area of the world known as Asia, recording with his camera the lives and ways of living he found there.

Seemingly not much interested in the usual tourist haunts Mr. Kelly traveled the back roads into magical worlds seldom seen by Westerners. The books 1000+ pages are filled with engaging photos captured with a true artists eye toward the aim of revealing the details, great and small, of ways of life and culture that are quickly vanishing due to modernization of the world.

The 3 volumes are filled with full page images of people and places as well as fascinating mosaics showing the myriad of variation and detail of such common objects as hand carved wooden doors in the Middle East and food carts in Indonesia. From the deserts of the Middle East to the islands of Japan, human life, art and culture is captured in fine detail as well as epic vistas.

It’s a feast for the eye. Your mind and eyes are drawn into the detail of color, pattern and design and I soon found myself in a state of meditative calm. I was launched into thoughts comparing my way of life with the many others shown here. I was astounded to see designs and patterns nearly identical to those used by native peoples in North America for thousands of years. I was especially delighted to find images of a few places I had visited myself in my limited travels to east and southeast Asia.

I have had many books pass through my hands in my life but this one is truly remarkable. It’s a captivating photographic study of Human essence, ways of living, art and architecture as well as people at work and play.

The author, Kevin Kelly, has had a storied career as an author and editor, being involved in such varied endeavors as Wired magazine and The Whole Earth Catalogue, but I feel certain that the labor of love that is Vanishing Asia is the work he will be most remembered for.

A Transcendent Book of Vacation Snapshots
May 24, 2022
I’m a Kickstarter supporter.

The central proposition is a red herring. Any batch of old photos captures a “vanished” something. If you took vacation snapshots in 1975 Paramus NJ, you could just as well call them “Vanishing NJ”.

Really, these are just Kelly’s vacation snapshots, and, because they were shot a while ago, they captured (as older photos do) some stuff that no longer exists.

But that’s not really what the book is. I mean, it’s full of stuff that’s still going strong. The “vanishing” conceit is a red herring. A marketing angle. When he shot this stuff, Kelly couldn’t possibly know what would last and what wouldn’t. He wasn’t shooting “Vanishing Asia”. That would be a paradox!

But hopefully the conceit works, so people buy this. The average person, who hasn’t been following Kelly for 40 years as I have, won’t understand how cool it would be to own a book of Kevin Kelly’s vacation snapshots. So they need a jazzier framework.

But, in the end, “Kevin’s Vacation Photos” is what you need, because no one has a keener eye or deeper perspective, and those faculties make an otherwise pedestrian proposition really transcend.

Captions are terse and often unspecific, apparently relying on Kelly’s current memory. It’s organized somewhat capriciously, but Kelly has great taste, so his caprices work. I didn’t realize I needed a page filled with stamp-sized shots of South Indian doors, for goodness’ sake. But I was delighted to come across that page. Pure mirth.

Photos are mostly more documentary than artistic. Kelly boasts that he shot with crap cameras. And, sure, photography is more a matter of perspective, angle, framing, and timing than color saturation or pixel count. But understand that this is no NatGeo affair….nor was that the intent.

I could keep listing the many things this book is NOT (or complain that the book’s too heavy to hold in your lap yet too large to easily view on a table; optimally, one would read while hanging from the ceiling like a bat), but in the end, it comes down to this: it’s vacation snapshots of Asia, but it’s Kevin fricking Kelly so you really want it.

It brims with intelligence and passion. 10 million knowing decisions encoded in shooting, editing, and layout. Every decision smart, talented, tasty, and heartfelt. A big huge slab of lovingly encoded deft tasty goodness. Nothing’s vanished, it’s all right here.

For me, it’s a five star book, but others will get stuck on what this book is NOT (e.g. its title). Since reviews are for you all, I’ll say four stars. After all, this is, in the end, just Kevin’s vacation snapshots!

A book for the ages!

I am so glad that (a) Kevin Kelly decided to spend so much time of his life in Asia and (b) He’s a phenomenal photographer, organizer, storyteller.

This is a set of 3 photobooks with annotations and remarks by the author that help you discover the customs, traditions, rituals, dress styles of cultures in Asia that are fast vanishing under the scorching influence of pragmatic western capitalism. I fear that soon, the only way you’ll see how people lived in Asia all these centuries is in this book! You don’t just read these books. You visit worlds, stories and live untold lives!
