The Writers
Lisa Lutz is the New York Times bestselling author of the six books in the Spellman series, Heads You Lose (with David Hayward), How To Start A Fire, The Passenger, and The Swallows. Her latest offering is The Accomplice, coming January, 2022 from Penguin Random House.
Lutz has won the Alex award and has been nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel. Although she attended UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, the University of Leeds in England, and San Francisco State University, she still does not have a bachelor’s degree. Lutz spent most of the 1990s hopping through a string of low-paying odd jobs while writing and rewriting the screenplay Plan B, a mob comedy. After the film was made in 2000, she vowed she would never write another screenplay. She lives in the Hudson Valley, New York.

The book begins with the older Luna/Owen, Owen is married to Irene, and Luna is married to Sam. They live in the same neighborhood and Luna and Irene are friends. Luna finds Irene shot dead and so begins a murder investigation with Owen is the main suspect.
Luna and Owen meet in college and become friends. Luna had been living with a secret since she was a child. The secret is not revealed for most of the book. Owen is sleeping with a girl named Scarlet. He is trying to avoid her and she is stalking him. Scarlet is found dead and Owen is the main suspect.
Luna by virtue of her past, and her close relationship with Owen, is also suspect in both deaths.
A good book, with a story line that keeps you reading.”

Oh, if only all the good things about THE ACCOMPLICE weren’t tethered to a plot, because this is a novel of character and motivation, but I guess there has to be a plot in order for those good things to have somewhere to go, and that plot is such a tangle that the end kind of falters because of it, and then there’s the end of the end, a perfect last couple of sentences, that redeems all that mess, but again, we have to go through the not-so-good stuff to get to the good stuff, and … well … I still loved THE ACCOMPLICE, as I do any Lisa Lutz novel, but, well … even as I’m satisfied, I’m not perfectly satisfied. I’m not even sure I know what that means and yet that’s where I came out. Maybe because setups should stick their landings, and not be too dependent on suspicious timings and a sneaking suspicion that the author wrote herself into a corner and did her best to cauterize all those loose ends to get where she meant to go and be able to call it a day, and call it a good one.
OK, enough of that. Did I mention that I loved THE ACCOMPLICE? I did. In part because I know these people, sort of. Haven’t we all know an attractive man and an attractive women who seems to have a force field around them that fences out everyone else, and you’re sure they’re having sex, only you aren’t sure, and you’ll never be sure because you don’t have enough facts, because they’ll never say, and because you can’t get out of the way of projecting your own feelings and outcomes on them. People like that drive me crazy because I’ll never know them more or less than I want, and because I’ll know that knowing full well that I can’t help projecting myself onto them, and even as I know it and despise I can’t stop myself from doing it, and that’s a feeling that stayed with me through every passage and every page of this novel.
Also, I’m reminded by any number of people I knew in college and the years just after, many of whom could be clustered into two categories: the sophisticates and the reticent. The sophisticates looked great and smelled great and sounded great and had an air of always knowing the score even as you sometimes learned much later that they DIDN’T know the score, not always, and yet they had been conditioned before birth to present precisely the opposite to the solar system. Kind of like Griff and Owen. Then there’s the reticent, the ones who capably substituted legitimate mystique borne of strategic silence for a more conditioned sophistication, like Luna. The relationship between Luna and Griff, and the friendship between Luna and Owen … each makes perfect sense because of the intrigue about the chasm between one another, and their ability on a soul level to build a bridge across that chasm when it counts most.
The inherent conflict between those two polar axes, those states of being, manifests itself in a delicious tension that keeps the pages all but flying, and yet that’s not right because this is no empty-calorie, super-jacked, Red Bull-fueled Hudson News thriller. THE ACCOMPLICE is a novel of cooled heat, and so even as I kept turning pages, I kept turning BACK pages because I knew if I read too fast, I’d miss some important plot detail or nuance of character, and I read the whole novel that way, and weirdly, I didn’t mind that one bit.
So, yeah. Lisa Lutz alone does this to me. Every damn time. And THE ACCOMPLICE is exactly no exception. Even with that dizzying, flummoxing flurry of fury and lies and secrets and betrayal and affairs and blackmailings and, oh, yeah, murder that got in the way of the good stuff about this thriller, which really isn’t that kind of thriller, or at least shouldn’t be, and yet it is because I guess I has to be, and I can be OK with that because of all the more-than-OK stuff in it..”
