IT IS TRUE. ADD or AD(H)D is caused by Trauma: Here’s why
October 14, 2019

ADD or AD(H)D is caused by Trauma. What both Maté and Bessel Van der Kolk ( author of The Body Keeps the Score) have found is 100% true.
it doesn’t matter that conventional psychology hasn’t yet found a ’cause’.
The DSM defines mental illnesses by identifying common behaviors that are found grouped together and calling them a disorder. This is like Columbus landing in the Caribbean, seeing a group of people who seemed to him to be “Indians” and so concluding that the land he had reached, was in fact, the West Indies, and so the people he was looking at were in fact, Indians.
Without a concept of the bigger picture, logical assumptions only become circular. Without a clear answer, the circle functions as the answer.

The DSM does not mention definition, a cause or a cure. If you’re ever left with asking yourself, “Yes, but what is it really? Where does it come from, what does it do to my brain and how can i reverse it?
This book will give you all of your answers. Trauma distorts the brain in many, different ways. it is the cause of many mental “disorders.’
instead of this modern pathology, that doles out pharma drugs but no answer,
Maté can answer exactly HOW you got ADD, exactly HOW it has changed your brain, and exactly HOW you can work on your behaviors to slowly reverse the changes in your brain.
ADD, luckily, it is easier to recognize, isolate from your psyche, and work to reverse old patterns.
After unraveling your individual history and clearing away the fog, you can see your ADD self vs. your healthy self. You can then recognize when you find yourself tuning out, and tune back in. When you find yourself forgetting about time, float back to the present.
Reading this book will make all the difference.

Gabor Mate can change the world!
May 10, 2021

Essential for people struggling with ADD. I wish this information was available when I was a kid. I grew up thinking I was lazy and stupid and now I work as a grocery-clerk at 38. This can also be a crucial study guide for new parents who don’t want to pass on the same mistakes their parents did. This should be required reading for everyone. And Gabor Mate has a way with words that even the ADD mind can grasp. He is a genius and one of the most important figures of our time. He should be nominated for a nobel peace prize because his work could change the world for the better and catipult humanity into a new age. I strongly believe this.

From the ADD inside…This book is too wordy for the ADD Reader

Maybe well -intended , but lots of Waaa-aa-asted time telling us about the back story.
Habe had ADD since I was a kid, taught ADD kids and worked on Wall Street…..I am very Patient but I did not fine much redemption in this one. ….. Stick to the book by ADD MDs – “Driven to Distraction” for something useful.

Thoughtful approach to help ADDers.
July 29, 2020

I learned a lot in this book. It helped me see why certain overbearing personalities rub me the wrong way. Dr. Mate gives good advice for parents of kids with ADD and for adults with ADD. His perspective is unique. I appreciate his words about using a gentle approach to help ADDers to love themselves, nurture themselves in ways they may have missed out when younger. Much sensitivity and love here.

A very important read
October 29, 2021

My therapist suggested I read this. It’s been eye opening and has helped me connect some very important dots in my life and my upbringing and the person I am today. Gabor Maté’s writing style is eloquent and flows smoothly and is easy for most people to understand without a degree in psych. Most importantly, it’s helped me figure out next steps to talking to a psychiatrist to get proper treatment.

Even if you yourself don’t have ADD, I think this is still an important read if you have someone close to you who does such as a child, spouse, or family member. It will help you understand them better. And then let them borrow it because it will help them understand themselves better. It’s definitely a valuable tool.

Typical Mate book. Delves to root of societal problems. Clearly thought out and researched. A pleasure to read and think along with Mate.

Misses the boat
April 30, 2022

For over two decades I have read and researched ADHD and have come to agree more with current ideas that ADHD is what I call AEF (alternate executive function). Gabor’s approach is passé. A child is born this way; it is how he/she is wired. Blaming dysfunctional parents is not helpful. The farther I got into the book, the more I realized that it is terribly out-of-date. So I checked the copyright: 1999.

A new, snazzy cover and a new printing does not equal a new book. Don’t waste your money on this book.

An overview of ADD/ADHD
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2019

I came to this book via two routes. Firstly as a psychotherapist with a professional interest in the matter. Gabor Mathe is highly regarded by many of my colleagues because he integrates both psychological and medical matters. Secondly, I also do some carework which includes supporting people with ADD/ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder).

The book starts, perhaps inevitably, with a description of ADD but with an extra personal element. Dr Mate himself has been diagnosed with the condition. He shows how it affected his ability to concentrate, such that he was a late developer. He shows also how his continual shifts of attention contributed to his becoming a workaholic and the effect it had on him and his wife.

In the journey, Mathe also looks at various factors which may help to create the condition. This includes family environment, psychological trauma, emotional issues such as emotional attachments as well as medical and neurological factors. He also looks at the behaviours of sufferers of the condition which may include inability to concentrate, listlessness followed by hyperactivity, a lack of self care which may be taken as laziness, their inability to form proper emotional bonds as well as them being sensitive and labeled as temperamental.

All of these are things I believe I have encountered with such people. What is helpful about this book is the way it draws so many strands together. Towards the end the book moves on to look at ways of treating suffers. As Mathe suggests this may be difficult for family as it involves their working on their own issues and maintaining a positive attitude towards sufferers who may respond with sometimes challenging behaviours. At the end Mathe states his preference for psychological help for sufferers of the condition, though he is not against drugs being used as a hopefully last resort.

All in all this is an elegantly written book which will help widen understanding of ADD/ADHD for sufferers, carers and those interested in the issues connected with it.
