This will be a classic

I have been wanting a book like this for years now!
In the engaged homeschool mom/parent world, we often talk about wanting our kids to be “life long learners” and we also talk about how we can be examples for our kids. That we can show them how we are curious or that we can follow our own goals and interests so that they can see by our example that learning is fun.
But here’s the thing, HOW do we demonstrate “life long learning” without some sort of guide? Learning equals change and change is hard — especially for adults! Are we growing and curious and changing as we re-think and listen? How do we model this? Do our kids just see us buckling down and being immovable and irritated with anything we disagree with? Or are we honing our own opinions and values in curiosity that refines them continuously rather than being instantly judgmental? When we can learn to sit with the discomfort of different opinions we create emotional and mental safety for our kids to explore and learn to think for themselves.

The chapter endings have very practical ways that we can engage with our kids during the day in different ways. For instance, how to identify view points and how to talk to our kids about differing views. The book isn’t going to try to convince you of a “side” of any issue, but rather how to zoom out and examine the “sides” of any issue AND to recognize our own reaction to hearing something we might disagree with. Just because we feel uncomfortable does not mean that thing is “wrong” — so how do we know? How do we think critically about all the different things? How can we be, and model, that mythical “life long learning” thing that so many moms have said they want for their kids? This book is the wise woman to walk us through this process with each age group of our kids and especially with ourselves.

As great as the digital copy is, I am looking forward to my physical book because I will be carrying it around and marking it up and adding sticky notes all through out! It is one to read for the fun of it first, and then to read slowly and again and again as you use the tips and ideas over the years.

We want to raise our kids into competent adults who are curious and thinking and always learning. We know they will think differently than us (who among us thinks exactly the same as we were raised?) So, can we learn to hold this space of relationship even as they (and us) are changing and being “life long learners”? — Yes! Yes we can hold the space and love each other even as we are growing and changing and my disagree. It is uncomfortable to allow room for disagreement, but Julie Bogart’s book gently guides us through this process of learning how to think carefully. And the result? The fertile ground for healthy growth and connection with our kids for our whole life.
