This book is a giant headache

February 26, 2020

This book is not a great resource. I give it 2 stars only because the disease-specific chapters, known as the pharmacotherapeutics with multiple drugs section, are decent. The pharmacotherapeutics with single drugs chapters, focusing on classes of drugs, reads like a lumped-up copy-paste of dozens of Stat Pearls. There’s little to no editing going on. I’ve found tons of simple typos and major errors that affect meaning, such as “leukotriene agonists” as a treatment for asthma. A mistake like that in a fifth edition? For a first-time learner like myself, this led to me scrambling to understand how that could be true, only to find it wasn’t true. I’m constantly fact checking this book. Terminology changes from paragraph to paragraph. Under the pharmacokinetics sections you may have drugs in order of A, B, C, X, Y, Z, but in the next paragraph they’re reordered as Y, B, C, X, A, Z, leading to an unnecessary headache trying to take notes. Paragraphs are wasted on drugs such as terfenadine which isn’t on the market and hasn’t been for like 30 years. Multiple paragraphs about decades-old FDA warnings which could be cut to the most recent recommendation. I struggle to tell what’s important information and what isn’t because a lot of it isn’t. Can you tell I’m frustrated? t’s a shame that this is the book I have to use for school.
