Excellent resource, although beware of typos.

I am currently in the middle of my medical school surgery clerkship; I have found this book very helpful but I cannot speak to how useful it is for preparing for the surgery shelf exam. Thus far, I would highly recommend it as a much more thorough resource than the other 3 books that were recommended to me because this book contains more information that is presented in context (the other resources contain bullet points of individual facts without much context).

This book covers a lot of information in a reasonably concise way. It is divided into 7 units, each containing multiple chapters and each unit ends with multiple choice study questions including answers and explanations. The material is presented in an outline format which makes it helpful to find relevant subjects quickly. Notably, it offers an overview on working through differential diagnoses and includes tests, treatments, etc. However, it assumes knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry elsewhere so use this in conjunction with other resources if you need a refresher (e.g. the book will say “use phenylephrine as an alpha agonist to cause pure arterial constriction” [paraphrased], but will not discuss what alpha receptors are, where they are located, side effects of medication, etc); that said, knowledge of these subjects is presupposed for the surgery clerkship so I do not view this as a problem.

Of note: this edition does have a number of typos in it, so user beware. For example, page 26 lists nitroprusside as a vasopressor (which it is not) and also as a vasodilator (which it is). I find this annoying, but I still think this book is worthwhile overall.

Bought this for my M3 surg rotation. It is in outline form, which is admittedly not my jam. It’s an ok review, but I’m not finding it comprehensive enough for case preparation; additionally, there are numerous typos (and as anatomy is not my strong suit, this makes it very frustrating to parse what’s correct from what’s incorrect). I haven’t taken the shelf yet, but I’m doubting it’s going to be enough info to be a comprehensive resource for exam prep which is what I really wanted.

This is a great book for surgery clerkships. Read it cover to cover and has room for your own notes. Read it cover to cover, coupled with UWorld questions from IM cardiology, GI, Pulm/Crit Care, and Endocrine. Don’t forget the surgery questions also.
