I have all of my text books on kindle (this semester as well as previous ones). This by far is the worst digital textbook I have come across. First, there is no quick reference chart for all of the values at the beginning (or end) of the book–as the hard copy has. Second, when you need to go to a specific page–you have to search by location, not page number (anytime you input pg. no. it says it can not be found); I had to search by index–which by the way has “B” in front of L! Third, it reads like a pdf!?!? and is very glitchy. You can not zoom on it, even on your phone or iPad. Five, it does not list page number, chapter number, or title of chapter at the top (or bottom) of any of the pages. Gosh, my back pays a price for carrying books but I have to make an exception here. I’m trying to change this ebook for a hard copy.

I am not that fond of this book. One thing that I have found out about Blood Banking, you are better off reading the AABB Technical Manual. I read the older one and newer version in the Lab and it is much easier to follow. Harmening’s chapters, especially on Transfusion reactions is laid out horribly. Read the Tech manual…..my opinion.

I didn’t like this book that much, it was not helpful for my immunohematology class. The most disappointing thing is a lot of topics I tried to look up were not even found in the book, but were found on the internet and in my class notes so I know they exist. Kind of annoying when it has so many other topics in great detail.

As a required text for my online course I figured I could swing by on the lectures…uh, no. So I took our blood bank AABB book home for some supplementation (which was definitely amazing) but a bit much for my class expectations and too lengthy to easily pinpoint what I needed, so I rented Modern Blood Banking & Transfusion Practices. I work in the field so the technical aspect was, in my professional opinion, executed in an easily understandable fashion. I would recommend this book to any student it’s required to, as it is easy to follow and relate concepts. If I was the type of person that appreciated a library’s worth of knowledge on my clinical profession in my living room, this would be on my mantle. But I’m not, this girl returns them all because my mind’s a racing entity that wouldn’t find old textbooks anywhere close to being useful for studying for my MT. All in all, impressive read!

I enjoy reviewing in this book or previewing the lecture material for immunohematology. Since I print my powerpoint 6 slides/pg, this offers a nice blown up version of the pictures and diagrams my prof uses from the publisher. I think reading for class from this book really helps me enforce the concepts. And it was also nice that my used/like new book was in excellent condition.

I got this book for school. The author certainly knows there stuff! The only problem I have with it is if you don’t already know what they are talking about is can be very difficult to understand.

Great resource for my Immunohematology I and II courses. Has some useful diagrams and charts I frequently referred to while studying. Only downside was I found several spelling mistakes and other errors, something that drives me insane! All in all, decent textbook…it’ll get the job done!

This is a superb book covering the basic science underpinning blood transfusion, reference quality chapters on the different blood groups and a good overview of governance and regulation around component manufacture and hospital practice. It may be US-orientated in some of the specific regulatory description, but the science and much of the practice is the same on both sides of the Atlantic, and the principles of quality and good manufacturing practice are universal.
Very well written and laid out, with contributions from some of the leading experts in the field, everything is clearly explained and referenced. An excellent text for any student of transfusion science, (and excellent customer service from Sam Store in the States too)
