Attributes of Microbial Metal and Metalloid Metabolism PDF

This book explains the metabolic processes by which microbes obtain and control the intracellular availability of their required metal and metalloid ions. The book also describes how intracellular concentrations of unwanted metal and metalloid ions successfully are limited. Its authors additionally provide information about the ways that microbes derive metabolic energy by changing the charge states of metal and metalloid ions.Microbial Metal and Metalloid Metabolism PDF

Part one of this book provides an introduction to microbes, metals and metalloids. It also helps our readers to understand the chemical constraints for transition metal cation allocation.

Part two explains the basic processes which microbes use for metal transport. That section also explains the uses, as well as the challenges, associated with metal-based antimicrobials.

Part three gives our readers an understanding that because of microbial capabilities to process metals and metalloids, the microbes have become our best tools for accomplishing many jobs. Their applications in chemical technology include the design of microbial consortia for use in bioleaching processes that recover metal and metalloid ions from industrial wastes. Many biological engineering tasks, including the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and similar metalloid structures, also are ideally suited for the microbes.

Part four describes unique attributes associated with the microbiology of these elements, progressing through the alphabet from antimony and arsenic to zinc.

DISAPPOINTING EARLY WORK BY DEAVER, ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS WRITING TODAY
November 9, 2020

MY REVIEW 3.5 STARS***

I have been a huge fan of Deaver’s since the ‘90s and had been wanting to read this early novel of his for quite some time. I waited for it to be featured in a promotional email at a sale price but that didn’t happen. Recently just hit the “Purchase” button and paid the full retail price. This book was published two decades ago and since the foundation of the plot line is modern computer technology and the evolution of social media platforms, I would hazard a guess that many readers would gloss right over this early work.

Deaver is by no means the first author to flex his creative muscles to imagine a deadly downside to the rise of the machines. He correctly calculated that the growth of the internet and the pervasiveness of social media in people’s lives could logically pose genuine dangers to the world’s growingly tech savvy population. In this novel penned in 2001 Deaver depicts the status of computer industry and its technology at the beginning of the new millennium. The master story teller both informs and educates the reader with a fascinating fact based journey which chronicles the historical events and timelines that marked the rise of the computer industry. He accurately depicts the computer age and the surge of social media which were topical at the time he was writing the novel. The narrative is interesting, factual, and is replete with the terminology of the computer savvy population of that period in our history.

I bought my first desktop computer in 1999 and I can recall firsthand the sound of “…the rising and falling whistle of (the) modem’s sensual electronic handshake… to get online. “ It was a period during which technology was advancing at such an exponential rate of speed that a person could buy a top of the line desktop computer system one year and the hardware was obsolete the next. It was impractical to even try to “keep up” with the research and development of faster processors, the kind of memory used, and the size and speed of hard drives. Deaver describes this world of technological advancement that was occurring at the dawn of the new millennium for it colors the backdrop of a battle between good and evil that would largely be fought on line and within the boundless deep web.

The evil descends in the form of a computer “wizard” (the term used by hackers to describe those among them who’ve reached the highest levels of skill in the Machine World). People are dying and the homicide detectives and the head of the CCD (Computer Crimes Division) have determined they are facing a criminal mastermind. He is able to infiltrate the personal computers of his victims, access their social media accounts, and essentially learn the nature of every electronic footprint they have ever left on line. His code name is “Phate” but other than a disembodied screen name the police have no tangible leads of any kind. The serial killer is able to lure innocent victims to their deaths by using the perfect approach because he knows everything about them.

The head of the CCD is cognizant that the homicide squad and his own team of qualified computer cops are not equipped to meet the challenge they face without a special kind of help. He engineers the release of a prisoner convicted and confined in federal custody for a computer crime. In effect, he recruits Wyatt Gillette, his own “wizard” to match wits with the genius hacker who calls himself “Phate”. This isn’t a popular decision with the two homicide detectives, and when the head of CCD is killed, Gillette finds himself teamed up with Frank Bristol, a seasoned homicide detective who is partial to good old-fashioned police work. These two polar opposites (Gillette the “wizard” and Bristol the intuitive homicide cop) find themselves working toward a superordinate goal to catch a madman.

I would never level a criticism aimed at the technical content of a novel being “dated”. A reader who chooses to read the book knows that they are stepping into a time machine. In my opinion that category of criticism would be akin to slamming the setting and ambience of a novel of historical fiction. However, when I reached the 52% mark in the book, I had to reluctantly and grudgingly acknowledge to myself that I was frankly bored. The long passages of techno jargon, albeit dated, had become mind numbingly boring. I had become disenchanted in the book and simply disappointed in the novel at this juncture.

I read the final half of the book but never changed my opinion that I felt the novel was a big letdown. That is likely in large part because I love Deaver, I had actually been looking forward to reading this particular early work, and thirdly, I had expected the master story teller and master of misdirection to render a chilling portrait of the cold, narcissistic predator who had lost touch with reality and could no longer distinguish a digital player in a computer game from a living flesh and blood person. There was actually a fourth reason that this book disappointed. Did it contain Deaver’s “signature plot twists”? Yes, it did, but he turned the truth on its head at least a couple of times too many. The multiple surprises at the ending were unbelievable and dissatisfying. Character development was sorely lacking, and it was sacrificed to increase the suspense and pace of the narrative, but that too, was not effective in my opinion.

On a positive note, I did enjoy the dual interpretations of the title as discerned by the hacker and the homicide detective. The title of the novel [THE BLUE NOWHERE] is interpreted by both team members. In Gillette’s coined phrase, “Blue” referred to the electricity that made computers work. “Nowhere” meant that it was an intangible place. The seasoned homicide detective renders his own analogy later in the book. He equated “Blue” for the uniform. The “Nowhere” because that place on the other side of the door you’re about to kick in, or down that alleyway, or in that front seat of the stopped car is different from anywhere else on God’s good earth.

A gem: Thrilling and engrossing
April 28, 2021

This book was published twenty years ago, so much of the computer technology is so dated as to make the reader laugh out loud, but the characters and plot are top notch. A great read that makes you think, trying to figure out what is what and trying to stay up with the minds of the protagonists. The clues are there, but easy to miss, which is why I found this to be challenging and rewarding.

“A computer/hacker based mystery thriller”
January 8, 2012

“The Blue Nowhere” was written by Jeffery Deaver, a contemporary and popular mystery writer. Mr. Deaver has written numerous novels, several of which were made into movies or television specials. This book is of the mystery thriller genre of fictional literature.

The novel was written using an anonymous narrator and character dialog interspersed throughout the composition. The writing is straight forward, not complex, and should be acceptable to a wide audience. The writing style is fast paced clipped scenes, shallow character development with a concentration on action. The plot is tightly controlled with several twists and turns intended to capture and pique the reader’s continued interest. There is a good deal of computer jargon and functional computer descriptions, but not beyond the average computer user’s general understanding.

The story in main is about a brilliant computer hacker who is known by his online handle as”Phate”. Jon Patrick Holloway, aka Phate, suffers a severe psychosis; he has elevated his role playing fantasy to real life scenarios and is killing people. An equally brilliant computer hacker and former role playing partner, “Valleyman”, one Wyatt Gillette is recruited by the police to help capture Phate in a contest of wits and guile.

I quite liked this novel. It was fast moving and interesting in its concept. The plot was enthusiastic and the many twists and turns were well done. The characters were pretty shallow in development and some of them were easily forgotten in the course of the story. The scenes were equally shallow, at times a little dopey, and didn’t add to any memorable aspect of the action; but then the distinct feeling was that they were not supposed to in this fast paced thriller. Microbial Metal and Metalloid Metabolism PDF Download FreeIt had the feel that it was designed for a movie or television special as opposed to a memorable novel.

Overall this novel is a little light weight, but was quick and fun to read if you need a diversion. I would recommend it and rate it “Pleasurable not-memorable”.

Solid Deaver
September 1, 2013

I enjoy almost all of Deaver’s characters and his interesting plot twists. Just when I think I’ve figured out what’s going to happen next, and to whom, Deaver surprises me with a real “flyer” from leftfield! It keeps me on edge and interested all through the novel.

I never want to give away plot detail which will ruin the reading experience for others, but I will state that this particular novel would be best understood by those with some familiarity with computers. Microbial Metal and Metalloid Metabolism PDF Download FreeI can do a few basic things myself, but our protagonist in this novel has “mad” computer hacking skills, which he uses to battle with an antagonist with equal or perhaps even superior computer skills!
The novel seems to put forth the question, “Can an individual with such exceptional skill actually murder others using all that is known in the computer world? The Blue Nowhere??

I would definitely recommend this read for anyone who likes Deaver’s work, and the netherworld of computer gaming!

I usually enjoy Jeffrey Deaver books BUT…
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 14, 2014

Bought the Kindle edition of this book and didn’t realise how old it was, which might explain why the continual explanations of computing terms seemed somewhat archaic. Although elderly, I worked with computers every day so I’m not completely computer illiterate.Microbial Metal and Metalloid Metabolism PDF Download Free The book started off very compelling but, by half way through the story, I had to resort to turning pages without reading all the explanations as I was so bored and just wanted to get back to the plot. The book could have been reduced by 25% and retained my interest throughout but instead I only finished reading it through dogged perseverance rather than enjoyment. Loved Bishop the detective a lot and Gillette the hacker a little but didn’t really care about anyone else. How anyone’s managed to give it 5 stars beats me!

The last two Deaver books I have read are going in a different direction. Full of twists and interesting.
