Not so good
June 15, 2021

It really wasn’t what I expected. The idea of explaining in graphic format is very good, but in my opinion, simply highlighting the metabolic pathway that is being explained, leaving the rest of the metabolic processes in a barely visible format, does not clarify; actually is confusing. I understand that it’s very difficult to condense so much information in a few pages, but it does not provide much clarity. I must admit that certain parts of the book are excellent, but they are not in abundance. I’m sorry to have to express what I feel.
Thank you very much anyway.

A masterly explanation of the complex processes present involved in cellular metabolism

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )
Understanding and memorising the many complicated compounds, enzymes, co-enzymes, products and by-products of cellular metabolism is a major challenge for first year students of biochemistry studying medicine, dentistry or allied subjects.

Medical students learn more new words in their first year than language students and, judging by the names and abbreviations of these biochemical terms, most of them will be new to all but the keenest A level biology student.

This book, now in its fourth edition since it was first published in 1994, makes sense of the pathways. It starts by comparing the pathways to a map of the London Underground. You begin by knowing how to get from A to B via C and, as your knowledge increases, you then gain understanding of all of the intermediate stations along the way.

The large format of the book is ideal for this Atlas approach and allows the use of large scale diagrams with a text font size that remains readable at all times. In taking the reader through the pathways, the author first begins with simplified diagrams to explain particular processes in detail. He then greys out the less relevant part of the diagram to direct attention to the most important compounds and processes. This helps the reader from getting bogged down in detail and maintains a clear overview of the key functions of each aspect of metabolism such as generating energy from glucose or synthesising glycogen. The diagrams also contain plenty of miniature cartoons throughout to stimulate interest. Overall, there is a healthy ratio of around 60% diagrams and 40% text which differentiates it from conventional textbooks.

Highly recommended for all those learning biochemistry for the first time as an undergraduate, re-learning the subject for post graduate or just interested to read something they last learned many years ago.

WHAT
=====
A good textbook for those at undergraduate stage or taking the United States Medical Licensing Examination.

Although it’s an American university textbook it’s a superb resource for the English market. It shows the metabolism in health and disease.
Essential for medical and biochemistry courses.
