Better than I expected…Jam-packed with clinical knowledge!

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What’s this? )
The book begins by covering how to be a good medical professional and the steps to complete a clinical exam. The second section covers clinical presentations of illnesses (divided by medical specialty such as Rheumatology, Neurology, etc.), and how to evaluate the patient’s symptoms in order to narrow down the diagnosis. And then the last section covers diagnosed diseases and treatments.

Each topic is condensed into a couple pages but is sufficient to guide you to a diagnosis based on symptoms, etc. To test the book, I looked up episcleritis which I have and it says it’s not painful and that any related systemic conditions are uncommon versus its eye damaging cousin, Scleritis. Yet, if you do a google search, episcleritis can be related to Lupus and it IS painful. But I suppose there is always going to be contradictory opinions among medical professionals, as medicine is an ever-changing and dynamic field of study.

Overall the book provides great coverage of each subject by providing tables and images to give you “at a glance” a lot of information in a small amount of space. The pages are succint and interesting and provide a thorough overview of important clinical topics to give you a head start in your future medical courses, if you haven’t already started, or as a reference manual. There’s a lot of information packed into this book and I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed in this book who is interested in learning about medicine.

There’s also a companion website to enhance learning and retention of the subject matter using self-test questions and flash cards, plus a companion book titled, “Medicine at a Glance Core Cases”. In addition, to whet your appetite, sample medical cases are included on the website!

Very Worthwhile Medical Reference Material with a very British/UK English language and spelling.

Very practical for me as my Primary Care Physicians retire and their practice is changing/expanding. Being passed like a hot potato to new associates and 5-7 minute clips, I need to read before AND after my appointments. As I’m aging and all my parts don’t work as well as my younger versions, it’s good reference materials on hand as I decide to self-treat, go to Minit-Clinic or the doctors office. The web ordinarily is my library but this has excellent graphics, photos, graphs, tables and descriptionsa. Access to a website ataglanceseries (dot) com/medicine for additional info and tools for those wanting more indepth info and/or actually studying medicine.

Mom and Granny had medical reference books around when we were growing up so they’d doctor us BEFORE going to the doctors a last resort. I had available access to doctors for my own kids with low or no co-pay which I took advantage of it. So I really didn’t have reference materials on hand or need them.

I’m happy to have this on hand for myself and the kids I occasionally take care of too.

You dont have to have a advanced degree to understand.

Great not just for students but for people who want to learn about various medical conditions. I found the begining chapters about dealing with patients the best. I have a doctor who needs to learn that his patients are not just a number but actual persons with human feelings and emotions. The two chapters that interested me the most was Neurology and Dermatology. A family member of ours is in the beginning stage of dementia so this was very helpful. My family goes to the dermatologist alot so I read this chapter a couple of times and it gave great information. Some of the information I did not know about at all.

The thing I liked most was how user friendly it is. You dont have to be an advanced medical student to study- anyone can. It has great references and the pictures and graphs were extremely helpful in learning the information.

Great for the average reader as well as advanced students!

Thumbs up!

Pictures flow well

This book is full of great flow chart style illustrations. In no time at all, you can take a look at where certain symptoms lands you in the diagnosis spectrum, etc. Most subjects are given two pages of space. The pictures are the best way to quickly look over and efficiently pack the most essential information about each disease/disorder. The limited space available to cover each disease makes it sometimes difficult to give consistent categories of information across all subjects. There are some diseases that manage to get in a paragraph covering diagnosis, management, and treatment. Other diseases only get covered in defining variations before the two-page space is used up and we are made to move on to the next condition. This book gives a good general overview, and provides a decent starting point for medical professionals looking for diagnosis and treatment information for various ailments.

I am an RN in a busy office overseeing catastrophic work injuries. I work with a claims staff that has no medical training. It has taken a while but I finally am at the point where they understand that not everything they read on the internet is true. It has been my goal to provide my office with solid, up to date resources for their day to day medical questions. This book augments my efforts so well, it is the most used volume in my work library. Whether the questions are work related or personal, this book has a massive scope of readily accessible knowledge. I particularly like the sections on coagulation and dermatology.

This volume packs a mighty punch in 500+ pages, covering major organ systems and illness states. I now know if I am out of the office, the staff has reliable sources for their medical questions. If I could have only one volume of this series, this would be it.

NOT A BUNDLE contrary to the title.

The description states that this is a bundle which includes the core cases book. It doesn’t. If you look up the International Standard Book Number on the publisher site, it never did, though I think the previous edition was sold like that. It’s JUST ONE BOOK. The book itself looks pretty good, and is pretty heavy (which, not being a medical student myself, is perhaps the only way I have to assess it… 🙂 ) But seriously, it looks pretty useful, especially for PBL based courses which are case focussed.

Short and packed with information.

Short and succinct but absolutely filled to the rafters with the kind of information essential to a medical student. Has cleared up presentations which other books left completely unclear. Would recommend this book to other medical students. I haven’t tried the cases which come with this yet (was a bit disappointed they are just an online resource rather than separate book like the “bundle” would suggest) but would recommend oxford clinical cases for anyone looking for those too.
