Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools 5th Edition PDF

Dr. Shope is an academic general pediatrician and Professor of Pediatrics at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

He served for 21 years in the U.S. Navy and held positions as Pediatric Residency Program Director (2004-2008) at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Portsmouth, Va. and the Specialty Leader/Advisor to the Navy Surgeon General (2008-2011), managing and mentoring the Navy’s pediatricians.

Dr. Shope consulted for the Department of Defense child care system for 11 years and served on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Executive Committee of the Section on Early Education and Child Care, now the Council on Early Childhood.

He is a consultant for the Pennsylvania Chapter of the AAPs’ ECELS (Early Childhood Education Linkage System) program and advises the Pennsylvania Key in translating into practice the policies of the Office of Child Development and Early Learning.

Dr. Shope is a national expert on managing infectious diseases in group child care settings. He is the co-editor of the AAPs’ Managing Infectious Diseases in Child Care and Schools, now in its 5th edition and used by almost three-quarters licensed US child care centers; author of the AAP Red Book chapter, Children in Out-of-Home Child Care; Technical Panel Chair for Caring for Our Children, 4th edition; and is co-author of two online AAP educational modules: Curriculum for Managing Infectious Diseases in Early Education and Child Care Settings and Preventing and Managing Infectious Diseases in Early Education and Child Care. For nearly two decades, he has conducted annual educational sessions at national conferences and webinars, involving Head Start and other early childhood educators.

Lme “I can’t believe the errors in the book. How many editions has it gone through? View the table with ICPs. View the chapter summary on Endocrine and you will see. The errors in both the class lecture at UT Arlington (based on this book) and the book would trip me up for hours. This book is HUGE and not portable. The print is minuscule so my eyes get tired easily. Get out your readers! McCance goes into nitty gritty detail regarding many subjects that only researchers in a lab would need to know. Then McCance completely leaves out pertinent real life information you will need for patient care. Breast cancer is a very prevalent disease unfortunately, but McCance does not even touch on the main types of breast cancer: triple negative, triple positive, hormone positive, HER2 status, etc.. As a practitioner this is basic information to understand/know when working with your patients.”

Pen Name “First and foremost, I would like to acknowledge that this book is as dry as they come. I truly enjoy science, but this book is very disorganized in its attempt to explain pathophysiology, with no rhyme or reason to its flow. In order for me to grasp a subject, it is much easier for the information to have a flow, rather than have information jumbled throughout the chapter. Second, the eBook, as many have mentioned, contains no page numbers, making it entirely difficult to locate specific pages that are assigned by my instructor. Lastly, as some have mentioned (those who caught the erroneous entries), the book makes errors. I experienced this in the discussion the SEP-1 measure concerning sepsis (as a sepsis coordinator, I am well versed in the CMS’ SEP-1 measure). Unfortunately my university assigns this book as required reading. My advice is to utilize multiple books for patho (Goljan’s “Rapid Review,” or “Patho of Disease: An Intro to Clinical Medicine” by McPhee and Ganong) and even use internet sources. I am again editing my review for a third time to express how terribly written this book is. I have had to use internet sources on many occasions to interpret the authors’ points, and have come across more and more errors within the book. Proceed with caution.
Edit: For those seeking the SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL, if you turn to the “Ancillaries” portion within the PREFACE of the book (it’s in the e-Book as well), you will find a website to the supplemental material offered by the publisher, Elsevier. I too struggled with finding this, and my university required this supplemental info as part of the curriculum. It’s not something that is offered with a key code. You simply access the website (which won’t allow me to post) and create an account.

Czeller1993 “Used this book for one of my Pathophysiology classes for a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program. Decent book that is incredibly detailed and not easy to read—definitely would not suggest for those not in higher level provider/medical programs. The diagrams and drawings in the book are excellent and easy to interpret. Would definitely recommend. Got an A in the class having read this cover to cover!”

Shaneka Sturdivent “So, I am a student in a nurse practitioner program. As a means to save money on textbooks, I have been renting the Kindle versions of the required textbooks. My first two semesters I have not run into any problems. I started a new semester on 4/6/2021. Today is 4/7/2021.

This book has inaccurate page numbers. I have provided screen shots to show this.

1.) The photo that has the url of bookshelf.vitalsource.com is a version of this textbook with accurate page numbers. This is not the Kindle version. I have circled the page numbers. This book was purchased through my schools bookstore. Of course it costs twice as much as the Kindle version.

2.) Another photo shows the kindle version. Chapter 4 starts on page 133. However, the Kindle version shows Page 364 on the bottom. There are no actual page numbers on the pages shown.

3.) Another photo shows that my required reading lists page numbers. We are not required to read the entire chapters because we are testing ONLY on the pages listed in the required reading. This is to make an 11 week course more realistic when using a textbook with thousands of pages. However, because the Kindle version has inaccurate page numbers, I am not able to use this book. That is money wasted.

4.) Another photo shows the Kindle version of my genetics textbook. The page numbers are accurate and the page numbers are actually shown on each page displayed.

I’m not saying the quality of the book is bad, outside of the page numbers are inaccurate which makes it unusable for my graduate level college course.”
