Tackles problems with social development but awkwardly

I accidentally purchased this book as a prime free preview, but read it because I am an early childhood educator. I’m not sure what happened to the story between concept and print but perhaps it was over edited? Or tried to hard to show childhood thought processes? Or perhaps there are actual pages missing from my kindle version? The story seemed to leave parts of the plot hanging unresolved and unexplained. The child Agnes , is lacking social skills because she has always played alone, this is a very real problem children are facing in our current pandemic world. Unfortunately this story leaves too many inferences needing to be made by the reader. As a teacher I would need to heavily rely on stopping the story to ask questions of my class in order for them to understand that there was a problem in Agnes’ social cues that led to her very real heart break and missed opportunities for finding friendship earlier. When Agnes finally meets Anna, the connection between the two (although beautiful and touching in concept) is too abstract for a child to naturally understand when reading. I have certainly seen strong child friendships formed over owning the same shirt but the reader can too easily miss the very figurative analogy of “the universe opening” it needed to plainly state that they were instant best friends.
Would I use this book in my classroom if it was given to me? Maybe, since it tackles a growing common problem in child development, but I could never leave it in a substitute lesson or to a guest reader, because too much work needs to be done by the reader to understand the objective.

Such a delightful story written for ages 4 to 8. The drawings are well done and accompany the story which is about Agnes and her solitude. I read this on the Cloud instead of my Kindle.
Agnes lives on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and is aware of everything that goes on around her. She, unfortunately, is the only child in that big building. She knows who is cooking, which people have parties and all of the activities the older ones do…Unfortunately, no one has time for Agnes… One day she sees another little girl outside and is happy to think she may have someone….finally….for a friend that is close to her age.
No spoilers here but I felt great empathy for Agnes in her longing for a friend. Just imagine being surrounded by older people that have no interest in you. Agnes does devise a plan which she thinks may work…But, will it? That is the mystery in this delightful book.. Will being home alone turn into a friendship with Anna?
I loved the transformation of the stairwell and the excitement that it brought to Agnes. I also thought that Amadeus, the cat, was a nice addition to the story.
All in all, am pleased with my First Selection for February 2021. The younger ones will enjoy this message, I believe.
Most highly recommended.

Lovely art and conclusion

We got a kick out of the ending of the story and my boy laughed at the laughing lady in the bathroom. One of the better online store first reads for kids in awhile. Smooth “playback” in the app on his tablet too. Sometimes these digital picture books aren’t well formatted.

Nice story and beautifully illustrated. The illustrations are a beautiful addition to this story and extremely colorful. I love the moral of this story and the ending. Making new friends isn’t as easy as it seems. Sometimes we have to let relationships form naturally and that’s okay.

I read the story to my kids. They both really enjoyed it. I personally thought the artwork was amazing. Definitely added an extra depth to the story.

I wanted to start with delightful, but I noticed other reviews said delightful, so I felt I had to be different. I got this book for my granddaughter who is 7, and it’s perfect for her. I think she’ll love it. It’s a charming slice of childhood and a meeting of new friends. I highly recommend it. Nice illustrations as well. My only complaint is that when reading it on a Kindle, the print is very small because it shows a double page instead of a single page. This is true of many children’s books. I guess they’re not meant for Kindle. Too bad.

Beautiful pictures, story lacks understanding

The pictures on this book were beautiful. I love that it took place in an apartment and played around with a child’s view of the magical land of that home. The story however was lacking, it felt like it ended too soon and didn’t make a lot of sense. Most of the story the two girls were seperate and there wasn’t much happening. When they finally played together the story ended without much to show about their new friendship.

This is a cute story abut a little girl that lives in an apartment, but seems to be alone until a new girl moves in who happens to be the same size and age as her. Both girls seem to be reserved, so it takes a bit for them to finally meet, but then they do and you just know they’re going to be friends.
The illustrations are nicely done and the story isn’t too short or long.
My 6 y/o seemed to enjoy the story, as did I.
