The life of Newey written by a ghost writer. Very, very few sketches of race car components. No pictures. A light read, but no substance for the true gearheads among you. Nothing about really building a race car.

OK read if you’re into F1 stuff, but shallow on most angles

OK read if you like F1 but could be much better. If you’re looking for depth – about technology, people or how the sport works, rather than the details of Adrian’s childhood – you will likely find it shallow.

* Technical content has much to be desired – the drawings could be a lot better, explanations could be a lot clearer.
* More insight, thought and discussion about what makes successful F1 teams successful – about leadership, culture, people – would make the book a lot more interesting as well.
* More depth and quality portraits of the great personalities in F1 – there’s a bit about Bernie but the rest feels mostly bitterness and gripes.

Great read for any racing enthusiast

Awesome read for anyone who is an F1 fan, racing enthusiast, or engineer. I’ve been an avid Formula 1 spectator for years but I’ve never been able to gain much of an appreciation for what goes on back at the factories as far as vehicle development, beyond what you hear from the race weekend commentators. Adrian gives a fantastic account of his career in F1, with a large focus on the specific technical challenges and solutions season-by-season. He provides insight into some of the politics of racing, while not belaboring the topic. All of this is delivered in a conversational, easy-to-read book with authentic illustrations and digestible technical stories. Really fun read; makes me want to sit down and have a beer with the guy.

Wonderful technical detail

The book, organised around a sequence of F1 car designs, is nicely structured. A leavening of anecdotes and personal history, yes, and all that is interesting: but for the F1 devotee, the challenges and thought processes involved in crafting a competitive car are the focus, and Newey and his “ghost writer” Andrew Holmes do a first rate job of rendering that drama clearly, and with sufficient technical detail that I felt I really understood the sport better having read it. And I took down my Exoto FW14b and studied it with a new appreciation for its detailing. When I heard Steve Matchett talking about the “all singing, all dancing” Williams car with active suspension, I knew in theory what he was referencing. But Newey has given substance to that episode in a way I found utterly gripping. Similarly, the remarkable rise of Red Bull is followed with a frank acknowledgement of wrong turns and a well-armed pleasure in the successes. It is also pleasing to find my intuitive assessment of various F1 characters was not far off the mark. I won’t name names (Ron…) here, but Newey is fairly straightforward about who’s who, and what. Anyway, this was a book I couldn’t wait to return to whenever I had time. For anyone already interested, I’d say it is essential reading.

It’s about the car

For me auto racing has always been about the car, not the driver. That’s why they call it “auto” racing. I really appreciated the look into the technical aspects of race car design and being able to follow the steps of Adrian’s career. I found the technical descriptions very informative and the team interactions interesting. There is of course much more engineering that goes into a race car than just aerodynamics, but Adrian was able to demonstrate how all systems are influenced by the car designer to get the most performance from the car on the track. I particularly appreciated the inside story on the circumstances of Senna’s crash at Imola that took his life. Details that I had not heard before. If you love looking at every detail of how a race car is built you can’t go wrong with this book by Adrian Newey.
