-Women.com

“O’Connell’s historical novel, brimming with drama, romance, and intrigue set on the beautiful Italian Riviera during the 1920s, is perfect for fans of Downton Abbey. It also includes a diverse cast of characters and deftly addresses the prejudices of the era.”

Her high-class guests are demanding and hard to please. And she’s being targeted by a scheming and corrupt local politician, who threatens to drag her into the red-hot cauldron of Mussolini’s Italy.

To make matters worse, her marriage is in trouble, and her children are still struggling to recover from the repercussions of the Great War. All eyes are on the arrival of a potential love match for her son Lucian, but events don’t go to plan, which will have far reaching consequences for the whole family.

Set in the breathtakingly beautiful Italian Riviera, Hotel Portofino is a story of personal awakening at a time of global upheaval and of the liberating influence of Italy’s enchanting culture, climate, and cuisine on British “innocents abroad,” perfect for fans of Downton Abbey and The Crown.

Book just ended!
January 21, 2022

I really wanted to enjoy this book. Had a good potential plot line, but there was no depth to any of the characters. An easy read, no thought required. The ending was very disappointing because it just ended!? A very superficial book. So disappointing.

poorly written
January 25, 2022

Italy, 1926, English ex-pats running a hotel in Portofino-a combination that should have created a good read. Sadly the characters are uneven, over written, sometimes cartoonish. The plot is thin and predictable. Scenes stutter and don’t move the plot along. In short this book should have been a good read and it isn’t.

Excellent Character-Driven Story
January 31, 2022

I absolutely adored Hotel Portofino. But then I also adore Downton Abbey. Concentrating on the book, the reader will find a thin plot but a character-driven story full of a wonderfully complex cross-section of people.

Bella Ainsworth, daughter of a wealthy British industrialist, is the central character as owner and proprietress of the Hotel Portofino. After the Great War, she convinced her husband that their entire family needed a fresh start and what better place than where they’d once honeymooned – Portofino, Italy. The hotel has just opened and there are the usual things that go wrong. But beyond that are the guests and staff of the hotel. Lady Latchmere and her great niece (what secret is the Lady hiding?); Julia Drummond-Ward and her niece Rose (Julia is the ex-lover of Cecil, Bella’s husband; Rose is the pawn that almost reunites the Ainsworths and the Drummond-Wards); Count Albani and his nephew Roberto (who give the storyline local flavor); Lucian Ainsworth (returned from the Great War with PTSD, son of Bella and Cecil); Alice Mays-Smith (widowed daughter of Bella and Cecil) and her young daughter Lottie; Jack Turner and Claudine Pascal (American mogul and his mistress); Plum and Lizzie (international tennis star and his wife); Constance (the young British nanny who harbors a secret of her own); Betty and Billy (the cook and her teenaged son both from Britain); and a host of other minor characters.

Set in the spectacularly beautiful town of Portofino, the reader will become acquainted with this international blend of characters – some you’ll love, some you’ll hate, and some you’ll pity. Each characters is designed to bring out a different emotion for the reader. And throughout the story each character evolves in unforeseen ways.

Many reviewers have said they didn’t care for the ending of the story, feeling it was rather abrupt. Yet I enjoyed the denouement for what it was – a beginning of chapter two in what I hope will be the Hotel Portofino saga. This book is intended, I believe, as more of a commentary on the foibles of humankind rather than a story with a defined outcome. We are left to imagine for ourselves what happens in the future to each of the characters. And with luck, we’ll find out one day.

Happily, Hotel Portofino will be a PBS series sometime later this years – 2022. I look forward to watching it with high expectations.

I hope there will be sequel because the way it ended left me with too many in unanswered questions .
January 30, 2022

Bad ending maybe a sequel in the works , explaining too many loose ends, where did the painting go? Etc. The novel sounded more like a sitcom, never fully understood where it was going until I turned into the next episode. To be honest, I did enjoy the era, 1920 was a fun time in history if you were wealthy . I do hope there is a sequel, I would read it. Your writing skills are excellent, just need to fine turn the plot.

Overall I did like the book -characters, storyline -but the ending felt abrupt and I satisfying .. more like the prelude to the next book in the series

Good fast reading

Interesting. Characters eautiful scenery descriptions. A few plot twists. Reminiscent of Agathe Christie-a characters. Loved the descriptions of the hotel.

Didn’t really care for this book

I wanted to like it. Sounded like my kind of story but it was lacking for me in every way. And like another reviewer said, it just ended. Rather bland.

banal and did not do justice to Portofino and the area
February 2, 2022

I was very disappointed n the character development or lack there of. The author was working hard at making it a story and it showed. Unrealistic dialogue and characters. I wish I could ask for me money back. I will not read another book by JP O’Connell.
