Rife with typos and errors, but mostly beneficial

The pros: 322 questions that traverse the majority of the material learned in the first two years of medical school. Questions vary from “gimme’s” to “that’s ludicrous, do we really need to know that?” It does get your mind turning because questions are completely random in order, requiring you to move from topic to topic. There are many contributors to this book, so question formats are unique and explanations are varied… thus we enter

The cons: The many contributors lead some questions and explanations to being quite difficult yet educational, while others fail to proofread their questions and answers. This leads to a lot of head scratching and searching your texts to verify that they are, indeed, wrong. In the long run, this will help to fortify your knowledge of the material, but for a review source like this one, it is asinine to think the editors could miss so many mistakes.

I have to say that I enjoy most of the PreTest books, and even after all the mistakes in this one, I still enjoy it for quick review and keeping you on your feet during test preparation. I hope that the 6th edition will update some of the questions and fix the mistakes that riddle the 5th.

med students beware

The wide variety of topics covered in the book are great in terms of directing your studying. And the bank of five hundred questions is SUPER great for pinpointing your weak and strong spots in neuro. BUUUUT– beware when you buy this, whoever edited the book must’ve been half asleep. there are SO MANY ERRORS IN THIS BOOK. Not so much in the actual medical information presented, but in HOW it is presented. for example, a couple of the explanations to the questions get randomly cut off, or abruptly change topic mid-sentence, as if someone copied and pasted a chunk of text into the wrong place. Another FREQUENT example– many of the explanations will start off saying “the answer is X.” but then in the subsequent explanation, the author is CLEARLY arguing for a different answer choice (which, if you are reading each explanation, is not hard to catch. but if you are just checking answers by letter and not reading the explanations, you could get a lot of incorrect facts from this book. Also, a few of the diagrams are mislabeled.
The weird thing is, my friend owns the 6th edition, so I’ve been checking with her about the mistakes I’ve found– and among the questions that are in BOTH versions, many of the mistakes that are in this edition are not in the 6th edition……
