Clinical Endocrinology and Diabetes

The at a Glance series, is designed as the bumf indicates, is for those people already into their clinical studies and for those people who are practitioners in their respective field. The series lends itself, within the vocabulary it uses and in the clinical terms of which people who work in and around the clinical workplace/environment can deal with. The clinician does not necessarily have to be within the field that is being described and explained but within the parameters of clinical good practice et cetera.

These books then give healthcare students and other practitioners’ good concise pointers, accompanied by a plethora of pictorials and diagrams. Each subheading is designed to be relatively comprehensive and helps the reader comprehend the text at hand, brush up on – and an all-around good taste of the subject at hand. These books then are designed as an introduction to a specific discipline of a field of medicine.

This particular title, Clinical Endocrinology, and Diabetes at a Glance provide up-to-date coverage of new developments in best practice – that will improve the understanding of diagnosis and treatment of endocrine and metabolic disorders. The best team led approached basis for diabetic care as well as good practice in self-care including self-monitoring. While not necessarily a lay-friendly book, it is a text well worthy of its target audience.

Very good reference book. I use it a lot as a student nurse for my assignments and practical knowledge. Reliable, quick reference information with all necessary links, pictures and explanation. I would recommend.

Extremely well laid out and clearly explained.

As diabetes is a possibility in my own life, and I am borderline according tho my tests, I want to know everything there is to know about the condition and how to prevent it. It isn’t simplified or an idiots guide, you’ll have to focus and concentrate if you aren’t a medical professional, and it isn’t a replacement for the expertise of qualified medical doctors, but, it will prepare you to ask far more relevant questions, and you should trust your doctors answers. This is not a Bible for amateurs on the subject, it.will help and widen your horizons.
Saying which, this really is a very good doorway into the subject even if you don’t understand much of it, its your place to trust your doctor, not correct him.

This excellent Wiley medical text is aimed at medical students and doctors. Following the layout and recipe of the ‘at a glance’ series (which all seem to be good), these three consultant endocrinologists have done a good job of presenting their information in a readable, concise and engaging manner.
The book is split into ten sections, which are an introduction to endocrinology, disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, disorders of thirst and fluid balance, thyroid disorders, disorders of calcium homeostasis, the adrenal gland, the reproductive system, neuroendocrine tumours, endocrine emergencies and diabetes mellitus. The contents pages show the breakdown of each section and tell you that the last section is clearly the largest, whereas the index at the rear is compact but functional.
There is ample use of colour, headings and sub-headings, illustrations, tables and where appropriate, graphs – all of which adds to the readability and accessibility of the data. There is no waffle – only clear paragraphs of what you need to know, making this an ideal text on the subject. Really, this book is not one of those you should study but rather one that you must! You will find it an essential reference for the future too. Hats off to Wiley – another triumph!

This is another excellent text from Wiley in their ‘at a Glance’ series. This one is specifically and tightly focused on the national curriculum for UK medical schools which was developed by the Society for Endocrinology, Diabetes UK and the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists, so it is the very best overview you can get of this very important field of medical practice.
The book is beautifully laid out and every section is structured to ensure every aspect is covered, from symptoms and diagnosis to treatment, management and follow-up. Every aspect of the speciality has its own section: the hypothalamus / pituitary axis; disorders of thirst and fluit balance; thyroid disorders; disorders of calcuim homeostasis; disorders of the adrenal gland; disorders of the reproductive system; neuroendocrine tumours; endocrine emergencis and diabetes mellitus. Each section contains separate chapters on each condition therein and the use of photographs, x-rays and diagrams support the text and graphics. It is a superb resource for medical and nursing students.
