Werner mastered an effortless state of flow in his music.

Kenny Werner has been a world-class pianist, composer, and teacher for 40 years. In 2010, Werner received the Guggenheim Fellowship Award for his seminal work, “No Beginning No End,” a musical journey exploring tragedy and loss, death and transition, and the path from one lifetime to the next.

Now he has coalesced his knowledge into Becoming the Instrument, the highly anticipated sequel to his landmark book, Effortless Mastery, which revolutionized how musicians approach their craft.

In Becoming the Instrument, Werner shares how anyone can experience mastery, drawn from his experience as a musical master. It’s the guide for seeing the highest in oneself and others.

This new book is for anyone who wants to understand the fine art of mastery and how it applies to their own life. He brilliantly yet simply expresses how to lift one’s perceptions from the mundane to a higher plane, and he does it with a sense of humor.

The next level is attainable.

“Mastery is not perfection, or even virtuosity. It is giving oneself love, forgiving one’s mistakes, and not allowing earthly evidence to diminish one’s view of oneself as a drop in the Ocean of Perfection.” ‒ Kenny Werner

Werner shows us how musicians and artists do it. He lifts the curtain on that mysterious process and shows how anyone, even businesspeople, can allow the “master creator” within to lift their performance to its highest level, showing us how to be spontaneous, fearless, joyful, and disciplined in our work and in our life.

Are you ready for an inspiriting journey?

You’ll love this look at how he became top in his field, while explaining his process for the rest of us with absolute clarity in a way no one on that level has ever done before.

Powerful ideas, terrible editing
January 31, 2022

Kenny Werner has some powerful ideas about the relationship between the self and musical expression. They’re worth absorbing. However, I don’t think this book was edited… or even proofread… at all. The trouble starts with the second page of text, where several lines of Herb Alpert’s praise are duplicated. After that, it’s basic copy-editing mistakes… grammar, spelling, misuse of “your” and “you’re,” and plenty of conversational rambling that’s fine to hear in person but tiring in print.

The concepts Kenny is communicating through all of this are life-changing, so the book deserves better. If it was self- published, it looks it. If a publishing house released it in this state, the editor should find another career.

This timeless work packs in so much insight about performing, practicing and growing as an artist. The author holds nothing back and speaks from the heart and the gut. I felt I was in his master class. The examples are from a musician’s perspective but apply to other art forms as well.

Peacefully Energizing, Healthy Wisdom for Musicians and Everyone

I am a long time music professional and educator. I also happen to be recovering from a challenging epside of focal dystonia from guitar playing. I found this book to be incredibly healing and encouraging. It was also very entertaining! Kenny Werner comes across as honest, matter of fact, deeply geneorus, wise, vulnerable, and funny all at the same time. I have been using the meditations most days before I practice and the guidance while playing. So helpful! I am very grateful for this wonderful book!!!

Essential wisdom from a Master

To play is a very good idea. Unfortunately er may forget to play as adults -even if we play music as amateurs or professionals. Kenny Werners first book ‘Effortless Mastery’ gave musicians (and others) a path to liberating their own mastery. ‘Becoming the Instrument’ offers a very practical, simple -and playful- way os living like a master. An immense gift.

You won’t know how much you needed this until you read it.
Those who have read Effortless Mastery, Kenny’s previous book, are thrilled to have this unexpected gift.
Unexpected, yes; like the nature of true spontaneous creativity, but as close as our next breath.
Kenny shows The Way. 🙏

Redundant EM Sequel that’s Unnecessary
March 5, 2022

This book seems to be written based off of feedback Kenny got from people not fully grasping Effortless Mastery. Effortless Mastery is an incredibly powerful book that helped me to enter extremely deep spaces during performing. This book is written rather flippantly and doesn’t venture into new territory, it rather says the same things as in Effortless Mastery but from different angles. If you didn’t get EM, then this might help. For myself and I’m sure for others, this book won’t take them anywhere new.

Full of quirky humor, a how-to book on achieving flow and mastery
February 11, 2022
Reading this book, it’s obvious that Kenny Werner, director of the Effortless Mastery Institute at the Berklee College of Music, is an incredibly gifted teacher and coach. He has the most endearing, quirky sense of humor. At no point was this book boring!

The summary says it’s aimed at “musicians, artists, or even business people,” and while I do feel like that’s accurate, I think musicians will get the very most out of this book simply because he covers so many of the most difficult aspects of our careers—whether it’s efficient and effective practicing, learning to improvise, overcoming performance anxiety, or finding our way into “the groove” while performing. While not completely necessary, I do think it’d be helpful for readers to have at least some sort of background in music—even if it was back in middle school.

“I think the thing I was looking to be liberated from was me!”

Becoming the Instrument is perfect for readers open to ideas in a similar vein as Richard Bach and Eckhart Tolle’s writings. Werner includes guided exercises to help readers learn to access that coveted state of “flow” in order to truly achieve mastery. He also includes a link where you can listen to those meditations. If you’re new to mindfulness and other spiritual practices, or haven’t tried applying those concepts to your goals, this is a must-read.

Breathe and Connect

Thank you, Kenny. For trying to reach the musicians who do not understand how to break free and let themselves find their space. But beyond finding space, they become the instrument to fulfill their intentions and manifest their creative works.

The empathy of an object is something that is difficult to grasp. However, all music is subjective at least in my mind. So to change the object into a subjective form and assume that it has a soul, spirit, or some other pulse, I can fully understand how to connect my intentions through motivation and put them into action. The music comes alive with the connection to the instrument.

This book serves as a reference, one you would need to keep on the shelf and revisit. My own songs need notes but I do not have the instrument until I become it. I will keep reading this book as I continue writing songs. My instrument is out of reach so I will become it. Breathing.

I hope struggling musicians will benefit from this book.

Inspiring in every way and accompanies me on my way as a musician! Also for non-musicians a wondrous kind of experience to let go of things and find yourself. Set yourself free and be in the Space! Thank you Kenny Werner!
