Do they continue to work? Do they continue to care? Do they die out, go back to nature, try to elevate themselves to gods? How do the nearly omniscient AI deal with issues like monetary policy and rental agreements?

Typical and Predictable Interactions Between Groups, but still an Enjoyable Read

This latest addition to the Union Station series is, as all of the books have been, an enjoyable read. Gentle fun is poked at the illogical and heavily manipulated nature of the art market, with particular barbs aimed at the “uniquely human” concept of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). As usual, children always display greater wisdom and stronger work ethic than adults, women always have superior business instincts, focus, and emotional maturity than men, and aliens always have greater intelligence and insight than humans – even when those aliens are closely related to humans. Human adult males, at the bottom of the heap, are consistently hapless, mostly likable dupes, manipulated by those around them. None of this is offensive because the Union Station story-telling employs a light touch. But it does reduce entertainment value in that you know from the first word how any difference of opinion, contest, or comparison of performance between the pairings mentioned is going to turn out. There have been hints throughout the series, including this latest addition, about why the effectively omniscient Stryx value the backwards human race, but only hints, so you have to read between the lines and do your own interpreting to figure it out. In the meantime (assuming that someday “the reason” will be openly stated) the stories continue to be worth reading and to involve characters worth caring about.

I enjoy this kind of science fiction – unique ideas, great characters

This science fiction writing is unique, positive, and has likeable characters. I like that I cannot see a predictable worn out plot used before in other science fiction books. The ideas are interesting and not what I have experienced in previous science fiction stories. The characters are not idiots for the sake of creating a crisis to be solved. There is no detailed violence and graphic gore. It’s not all easy, but people are working to make things better – at least the main characters are – of course there are “evil-doers” in this universe too. The various EarthCent series, the original and the spin-offs, always provide me with reading that is uplifting or interesting or both.

The story is set on worlds within the tunnel network and further in the future than some of the other books. We soon learn that nothing is as it seems including the reasons behind the action. The characters are the usual diverse group. A great read.

If you enjoy E. M. Foner’s brand of nonviolent science fiction you will like “Artists on the Galactic Tunnel Network”. EarthCent and the Galactic Free Press team up to investigate extensive purchases of works of human artists by various aliens. Is it part of an alien plan to flood the Earth with knock-offs of human art, or a sinister plan to infiltrate human culture with alien values? As usual with Foner’s books, the reader learns quite a bit about a given subject while reading – in this case about the art world. You also learn something about non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which still make no sense to me – but then, maybe that’s the point!
