The Writers

“James Herriot (1916–1995) was the pen name of James Alfred “Alf” Wight, an English veterinarian whose tales of veterinary practice and country life have delighted generations. Many of Herriot’s works—including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing—became international bestsellers and have been adapted for film and television.

Herriot’s stories rely on numerous autobiographical elements taken from his life in northern England’s Yorkshire County, and they depict a simple, rustic world deeply in touch with the cycles of nature.”

Print is extremely small
September 9, 2016

In this particular edition, the print is extremely small, so small that I ended up purchasing the kindle edition in order to read it without getting a headache. I would give this edition one star, but I can’t stand to cast any aspersion on anything so wonderful as James Herriot’s writing. I would highly recommend getting a different edition of this beautiful book.

Well, I’ve watched the series 3 times and now I wished I had read the books first. I laughed so hard at some of the stories it was wonderful account of being a vet in the Yorkshire Dale’s. I’m Scottish and really understood where James was coming from and what he grew to achieve and ❤ Can’t wait to read the next book.

A Truly Great Read

James Herriot is a master of the pen. He twists and blends the stories into a wonderful long journey for the reader. His descriptions are hilarious and he truly knows how to keep the reader wanting more. Set in the thirties, you see a glimpse of just how primitive medicine was back then. With a mix of cattle, cats, pigs, dogs and sheep as regular patients, he has also included the owners with great depth. His boss, Seigfrid Farnon, the book just comes alive. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even more so because of the fond memories from the old tv series. Just love Herriot`s style and humour, THE VET book for others to follow.

To say that I thoroughly enjoyed it is an understatement

If I could have given seven stars, I would have given seven stars.

I first read this book some twenty years ago. Since then I must have read it at least 3-4 times. Recently I purchased the Kindle edition of this book and once again I lost myself in the 1930s life of a Yorkshire country vet. To say that I thoroughly enjoyed it is an understatement.

I suspect James Herriot ( a pseudonym) was first a born story teller and then a vet. His felicity with words is simply amazing. Stories happen around everybody but spotting them and then telling them in a compelling manner is an art mastered by few and James Herriot is at the top of the list. I won’t describe the stories here. Buy the book and read them. You won’t regret your expense.

I enjoyed this very much when I first read it many years ago. I thought that my granddaughter, who likes animals, would enjoy this.

I love the James Herriot books. They are such delightful, feel good stories & made an easy enjoyable read. He loved his work, the people, the animals & esp the countryside which he marveled at continuously. He writes so vividly you can see it & why he loves it so. He gets himself into situations anyone, esp anyone in the healthcare profession, will be able to relate to. I got this as a Christmas gift for a friend who read one of mine & loved it.
