Attributes of 100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet PDF

100 Things We’ve Lost to the Internet PDF To some of those things we can say good riddance. But many we miss terribly. Whatever our emotional response to this departed realm, we are faced with the fact that nearly every aspect of modern life now takes place in filtered, isolated corners of cyberspace—a space that has slowly subsumed our physical habitats, replacing or transforming the office, our local library, a favorite bar, the movie theater, and the coffee shop where people met one another’s gaze from across the room. Even as we’ve gained the ability to gather without leaving our house, many of the fundamentally human experiences that have sustained us have disappeared.

In one hundred glimpses of that pre-Internet world, Pamela Paul, editor of The New York Times Book Review, presents a captivating record, enlivened with illustrations, of the world before cyberspace—from voicemails to blind dates to punctuation to civility. There are the small losses: postcards, the blessings of an adolescence largely spared of documentation, the Rolodex, and the genuine surprises at high school reunions. But there are larger repercussions, too: weaker memories, the inability to entertain oneself, and the utter demolition of privacy.

Simply perfect

I love the simplicity and details of this book! Love the color categories too. As a novice bird watcher in the pandemic world I quickly was obsessed with all the birds I could attract by reading through what they liked. Loved being able to learn about how to identify them. I’ve identified over 25 different birds in my own back yard.

Great pictures and information

I bought this for my mom for Christmas. She has a number of bird feeders outside her front window and my parents argue over what types of birds were visiting. (they don’t own smartphones or use computers very much) The book is on the smaller size but the main picture of the bird is in full color and takes up a whole page. Information is on the accompanying page and it is just what the casual birdwatcher needs. She’s only had it for a couple of days but has already read most of it and has been able to identify a few of the birds they were unsure about. She has commented multiple times already how much she enjoys it.

This is a nice, comprehensive paperback book with good photos of birds. I recommend this. Bird description, information and photo are on one page. Priced right for all the good information.
