We are people of desire. The Soul of Desire PDF

In The Soul of Desire, psychiatrist Curt Thompson suggests that underneath all our longings is the desire to be known―and what’s more, that this fundamental yearning manifests itself in our deep need to make things of beauty, revealing who we are to others. Desire and beauty go hand in hand.

But both our craving to be known and our ability to create beauty have been marred by trauma and shame, collapsing our imagination for what God has for us and blinding us to the possibility that beauty could ever emerge from our ashes. Drawing on his work in interpersonal neurobiology and clinical practice, Thompson presents a powerful picture of the capacity of the believing community to reshape our imaginations, hold our desires and griefs together, and invite us into the beauty of God’s presence.

The Soul of Desire is a mature, creative work, weaving together neuroscience and spiritual formation to open up new horizons for thinking not only about the nature of the mind, but about what it means to be human.

Highly recommend for those who need healing in the context of relationships
October 5, 2021

Six years ago now, my life fell apart in the midst of a very public scandal concerning the company Ashley Madison. While much of the rest of the nation was captured by the drama, my world was turning to ashes. My husband had been a pastor. With his sin, I would come to lose my marriage, my friends and church community, and my four children (three years later) would lose their father to suicide. I felt all alone in the world. I sunk into a well of despair. I had my God who never left me and under whose wings I found warmth and comfort. But I longed to feel seen, soothed, safe, and secure. I wanted to be known. We are harmed in relationships and we are healed in relationships. At that point, I only knew the first part of that equation. I have a feeling that many people can identify with my story. The details might not be the same, but the feelings and longings and desires are not uncommon.

In the Soul of Desire, Curt Thompson discusses every aspect of my story using words like shame and brokenness and even betrayal. He walks through the lives of real people like me with whom I can identify. He challenges people like you and like me to reframe our thinking and not see our lives as “problems to be fixed” but to imagine our “lives in terms of being curious about what the next new artifact of beauty is” that we want to create. Our Heavenly Father created beauty all around us, most significantly in the person of His Son in whose presence I long to dwell. I also long to dwell with His people. For me, my Bible Study community has helped me to piece the broken pieces of my life back together. But Curt describes an even more beautiful community, a Confessional Community, where members can be vulnerably honest and where they can feel seen, soothed, safe and secure. Those are the kind of relationships that I want and that Curt has challenged me to create.

If you deeply desire to be known in relationships, and for “those relationships to energize” you to “create the beauty that we also long to become,” I would encourage you to read The Soul of Desire. Curt Thompson weaves together a fresh and solidly biblical look at the Scriptures, with interpersonal neurobiology, and an appreciation for the beauty of various artists and art forms especially the work of Makoto Fujimura. And He challenges us to not only see beauty, but to create beauty, and even to become beauty. I pray that your heart and soul will also be nourished and refreshed by The Soul of Desire.

A Book to Savor and Soak, not Skim
October 25, 2021

My first two decades were spent suppressing, ignoring, and killing desires. My caregivers shamed my desires to the extent that when my narrative was used as an illustration in a book on abuse, the caption was “Death to Desire.” That was my truth as a teen: if I had no desires, I would be safe, so I made every effort to do so.

For 16 years, the throws of motherhood have kept me busy. But they’re teens now and in I’ve heard God’s voice calling me to beauty. With all the trauma work I’ve done, I knew that cracking open desire and longing were the last great frontiers in healing my soul. But they were also the scariest to go. Scary because when I allow myself to feel desire, remnants of thousands of neuropathways that connect each desire to shame are reopened.

News of “The Soul of Desire” entered this scene of the churning of my heart and I got my hands on it as soon as I could. Many other reviews describe it aptly, and I won’t attempt to repeat what others can more articulately share.

But I will say, If you are a trauma survivor, be aware this book could rock your world, re-open wounds in ways you don’t expect. I encourage you to read it in community, where you can have safe spaces to pay attention to what surfaces when you read it. For me it has re-introduced me to the fear I have when I long for beauty, but more than ever I am encouraged to pursue it, knowing that it is ultimately what Christ is calling me to.

I think this book is best when used accompanied by its companion, the Being Known Podcast and Dr. Thompson’s previous book, “The Soul of Shame.” Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for writing a much-needed book. I’m sure it will have a space on my bedside table for years to come.

How people change and how groups can help
October 5, 2021

As someone who has led and participated Small Groups for over 40 years, I was curious to hear what Dr Thompson had to say about the connection between how our brains work (interpersonal neurobiology, Thompson’s area of expertise) and how people actually change and mature.
The idea of being a part of creating and participating in soul-freeing relational environments that encourage people to mature—to be making sense of our stories and becoming outflowers of goodness, beauty, joy and love in all arenas of our lives is exciting to me.
I’m looking forward to trying to implement in the groups I’m a part of or have an opportunity to influence what Dr Thompson is doing has described so vividly.
I highly recommend this book to any who are interested in learning about how people can be helping each other mature in community. I liked how Dr Thompson calls this practicing for Heaven.

Groundbreaking
October 5, 2021

Dr. Curt Thompson paints a picture of human longing and creativity which sparks hope. He effortlessly weaves the latest in interpersonal neurobiology and theology which had me gripped from the first page. Day-long air travel became a day of joy as I read this engaging text chapter after chapter.

“Place yourself in the path of oncoming beauty,” Dr. Thompson says, inviting us to be shaken free from pain and surprised by encounters with transcendence through art.

In this book, creativity is unleashed from shame and given fresh breath. As a writer and lover of neurobiology, I know this will be on my nightstand for years.

Beauty is Essential! Soul of Desire a MUST READ!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2021

In this beautiful book, Dr. Curt Thompson invites his readers to “pay attention to the world in a different way”. The Soul of Desire is an excellent, powerful and thought provoking offering from Dr. Thompson as he encourages and convinces his readers to examine the longings, desire and depths within each of our souls. Dr. Thompson truly believes that beauty, goodness and truth will change the world. He demonstrates, with compassion and sensitivity, this significant and practical life-change through sharing poignant stories of real people that he has served faithfully as a therapist. He weaves together his work in the area of Interpersonal Neurobiology—which is utterly fascinating— with his day-to-day work with clients in his personal therapeutic practice. I have read each of Curt Thompson’s other books, as well. I would highly recommend Soul of Desire and his other works to anyone who may want to know themselves and others better. His offering of hope for personal healing; as well as his proposal that we can heal others as we hold hope and imagine beauty—this offering is an invitation you just can’t refuse! In our current climate of daily doses of hard news, darkness, hopeless situations and broken relationships, this book is —100%— a must read!!
