“Man, I wish I’d had this book when I first became obsessed with electric guitar wiring and mods! Gerry Hayes’s Complete Guitar Wiring is both a how-to book for beginners and a reference manual for the experienced. The explanations are clear yet substantial. The diagrams are gorgeous. It’s equally useful for troubleshooting and finding new inspiration. Complete Guitar Wiring already has a permanent home on my workbench tablet.”

“Out of all the guitar books on the market—tech, coffee-table, and otherwise—I haven’t seen any that provides such thorough yet accessible instruction in the art of electronics and wiring. Not only has Gerry Hayes identified a real gap in the available resources, but he has done a phenomenal job of filling it with a book that’s comprehensive and detailed while also very approachable, offering plenty to beginner, novice, and experienced DIY’ers alike. Well done!”
Dave Hunter, author Fender 75 Years, The Electric Guitar Sourcebook, The Guitar Pickup Handbook

“When you’re in the guitar business for any length of time, you have the opportunity to meet the best—people like Gerry Hayes. His book about guitar wiring is a must-have for any luthier, guitar technician, roadie, guitar shop, and of course any player who is into guitar electronics.”

A Clear Thinker
This book is a must!
March 3, 2022

One of the most talented and generous luthiers on the planet has done it again. Gerry Haze, who has gifted us over the years with his brilliantly illustrated and easily understandable “Sketchy Setups” has hit it out of the park with “Complete Guitar Wiring”! This book is a must-have reference piece even if you never intend to wire a guitar. Each chapter is a fascinating in-depth look at what delivers our instruments signals to an amplifier. Do not hesitate – get yours today. You won’t put it down! Thank you Gerry!

Not for P-90 or Les Paul Jr lovers
March 31, 2022

I hate to be the dissenting opinion on this book, because I don’t like being contrarian and because this is actually a good book.

That being said, if you’re picking this book up to acquire knowledge of Gibson P-90’s or Les Paul Jr’s, this book is going to disappoint you greatly, as it did me.

Is the book beautiful? Yes. Is it informative? Yes. Does it delve deep? Sure, if you’re looking for information for just about anything else in the current mainstream marketplace and quite a bit that isn’t. Heck, even the wiring diagram for the short-lived predecessor to the Telecaster, the 1950 Fender Broadcaster, is in there.

I don’t even know how you can discuss 50’s Gibson wiring without mentioning P-90’s, but the author does. For over ten years, up until the introduction of the Humbucker in 1957, Gibson’s main pickup was the P-90. When I think of Goldtops, I generally think of P-90’s. When I think of Bursts, I think of Humbuckers (unless it’s a Jr).

Lest any of you think I’m carping over old, obscure guitar tech, Jr’s are still currently made and P-90’s are still being used to great effect in a number of modern guitars. The Yamaha Revstar, just to name one. Any big names rocking them? Yep. Plenty of guys, from The Beatles to Billy Joe Armstrong.

To me, their omission from this book is quite a shock, especially given their popularity. I bought this book so that I could have a wide general knowledge of all things concerning the internals of electric guitars and specifically so that I could have all of the information about P-90’s and Les Paul Jr’s in one beautiful format.

Instead, I’m really in the same place that I was before I bought it, gleaning whatever information I can from whatever disparate places (internet articles, blogs, and message boards) I can find. There is one difference though. I’m out $35.

My 50’s wired Les Paul Franken-Jr project is going to get built, but this book is probably going to wind up spending most of that time looking great on my shelf. “Sighs…”

Full disclosure: very slight, passing references (pp 70, 71, 180) to P-90’s/Jr’s are in the book, so I know the author is aware of them. The information isn’t really about them though, but rather a sentence or so regarding things that are related to them.

The NEW guitar wiring bible!
February 24, 2022

If you work on guitars at all-your own or others-you need to get this book. I have been building and working on guitars for over 20 years, and this is the best book on guitar wiring and electronics that I’ve seen. Gerry writes like he is standing next to you and explaining not only the “what”, but more importantly the “how” and “why”. It is an invaluable resource. Thank you so much, Gerry!

This is a fantastic compilation of every ounce of info you need to work on your guitar electronics. I am amazed at the amount of data within this book. I’ve been modifying guitar electronics since the late 80’s, for myself and local bands, and during the first hour of browsing this book I discovered 4 bits of knowledge that will instantly help me with my work. Many thanks to Gerry at Haze Guitars for putting all of his vast experience together in this veritable bible of guitar electronics.

Wonderful desk reference

This really is a great book. It is well written, and easy to follow. It has a complete section of wiring diagrams covering all of the usual suspects, including a few unique diagrams that make this book and exceptional addition to anyone doing regular work on guitars.

The reference material in the beginning is also really good. I pulled the book out to show the pictures and explain how a potentiometer worked to a client the other day.

I would recommend this book to anyone who works on guitars. It covers a lot. Especially perfect for someone in the early stages of their learning. For veterans, it’s a great reference tool.

Great student book!

I learned about this book just before graduating from Musicians Institute Guitar Craft Academy luthier school. They recommended it and had just added it to their campus library after it came out. Very clear, understandable images and diagrams. My understanding of guitar electronics was a weak spot for me on the the guitar I made, but this book is greatly helping me with that. So it doesn’t go much into P-90 pickups….whatever. Go ahead…try to find a better more comprehensive book on guitar electronics, because there probably isn’t one. Thank you Gerry Hayes for the work you put into this book.

A must have book for techs, luthiers and guitar players
March 29, 2022

Guitar wiring diagrams plus so, so much more. It’s well organized so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. It’s printed in color so it’s easy to see what goes where. It’s huge but there’s no filler. It’s a great book full of technical knowledge that’s also a fun read. I can’t recommend this book enough. You won’t regret adding this one to your library. Thanks Gerry!

Masterful, highly recommended!

If you don’t fancy reading all this review then just let me say – this book is worth its weight in gold!

Having worked with wood for some 50 years I promised myself that when retired I’d make a guitar. With some justification I considered perhaps an electric guitar easier to make than before perhaps “advancing” to an acoustic guitar. The woodworking side of the task has been challenging and I think largely successful. However, the real gap in my knowledge was understanding the electrics and putting into practice the skills needed to solder the components together. I am sure this book will succeed admirably in enabling me to do this – I feel empowered!
The author has put a lot of thought and effort into explanation and presentation. The large format diagrams are clear and uncluttered yet elegantly annotated with few words wasted or left wanting. I never thought a book like this could actually be read page by page sequentially at a steady pace with the realisation that one was being effortlessly enlightened. This skill comes with understanding and experience – and with every page this shines through. When I do fire up the soldering iron in the coming days I’ll know exactly what page I need to reference and how to get on with the job.
I love the colour markers on the pages delineating chapters but I do wish I could lay the book out on a flat surface without the risk of breaking its spine. Maybe spring bound version next time? Another benefit of this self-published uncluttered work is that the author has allowed space for the reader to add their own notes. So, to conclude, this is one of the best books on guitar construction I have in my collection – a definite keeper!

I am a guitar tech and subscribe to Gerry Hayes for his informative e mails. Also he builds beautiful guitars. I received notification about this book and purchased without hesitation.
For less than the price of a set up you receive decades of learning presented flawlessly with crystal clear presentation.
The chapters would guide a beginner, I wish this book existed when I started, and aid expericed hobbyists and techs with it’s breadth of information in one place.
It did not exist and Gerry has invented it.
This will sit next to Dan Erlewine’s Guitar Player Repair Guide on my bench and I suspect many others will do the same.

Already a fan of Gerry’s style of writing and illustration on-line, this printed book exceeded all expectations.
Beautifully produced, clear and exhaustive exploration of the subject.
Destined to become a must have classic in the mould of Dan Erlwine’s guitar repair manuals.
Expensive in paper form, but worth every penny.

Like one other here I’m looking to retirement with a plan to build acoustic and electric guitars. I’m already a fan of Gerry’s excellent Sketchy Set up PDF so I was delighted when I heard that he was putting this book together. I’m glad to say that I’m still delighted having received my copy. It’s an absolutely great book packed with information for all. There is something for everybody from the starter right through to the seasoned luthier. I thoroughly recommend this manual.

Destined to become THE DE FACTO book on Guitar Wiring and Electric’s
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 28, 2022

An true masterpiece, as a Guitar tech myself I can tell you for absolute certainty, this is the only book you will ever need for anything wiring related with your guitar. It’s written in a relaxed and friendly way which makes what could be a tricky and dry subject a real joy to read. I couldn’t put it down once I started reading it, I thought I knew a thing or two about guitar wiring but Gerry’s book has had me going “ah so that’s why you do that!” And “well I never knew that!”. The many example wiring mods and projects you can try on your own guitar are a particularly fantastic addition. Just buy it, you will not be disappointed.
