World War C Lessons from the Covid-19 PDF-CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, MD, offers an accessible, data-packed answer to our biggest questions about Covid-19: What have we learned about this pandemic and how can we prepare for—or prevent—the next one?

As America’s favorite frontline Covid-19 health journalist, Dr. Sanjay Gupta has barely left his primetime seat in his makeshift studio basement since the pandemic began (other than to perform brain surgery). He’s had insider access to the drama’s unfolding, including exclusive conversations with the world’s top public health experts and behind-the-scenes scientists racing to find treatments and cures. And now he’s sharing what he’s learned in a book that will answer not only all our questions about what happened, but also about how our world will change in the years ahead, even once we’re back to “normal.”

Gupta argues that we need to prepare for a new era where pandemics will be more frequent, and possibly even more deadly. As the doctor who’s been holding America’s hand through the crisis with compassion, clarity, and well-earned wisdom, he gives you the unvarnished story behind the pandemic, including insights about the novel virus’s behavior, and offers practical tools to ready ourselves for what lies ahead. He answers critical questions: Can we stamp out the virus for good (and if not, how do we live with it)? Should we put our parents in a nursing home? Where should we live? What should we stockpile? What should we know before taking a trip? Does it make sense to spend more on health insurance to deal with any long-term effects? How do you decide when it’s safe to go to a public pool or schedule elective surgery? What should Covid survivors know about protecting their future health? What if you become a long-hauler with chronic health challenges stemming?

World War C will give you hope for the future along with real information that leaves you more resilient and secure.

michael schulder “In World War C, Dr. Sanjay Gupta excels, as usual, at explaining medical science in a way that stays with you.
His explanations stick because he so clearly and vividly explains the why of things. We all know, for example, that Covid kills when it attacks the lungs. In World War C, Sanjay explains precisely how it “infects, replicates, spreads” and why it causes a “covid cascade in the lungs” — and why the new mRNA Covid vaccines prevent that cascade from happening. We get to know more about the thrilling race to develop these life-saving vaccines and the people who made it happen. World War C also includes the clearest, scientific, non-political, explanations of the two primary, competing theories about how Covid jumped into the human population: the lab leak hypothesis versus zoonotic, or animal to human, hypothesis.

It’s significant that the second half of this book is devoted to synthesizing the latest science on optimizing one’s health — of becoming as “pandemic proof” as possible. The information is actionable — now — in terms of how to “prime the body for pandemic proofing.” For example, we have heard so often that obesity is a significant risk factor for complications from Covid. I don’t think I’ve ever read such a clear explanation of why it is that the more fat you carry, the more “infected” you can become.

The second half of the book also educates us on the immune system and the quickly evolving research into how our guts — our microbiomes, and the diets that shape them — impact our overall health.

And then there is Sanjay Gupta’s long-term obsession with the brain and the actions we can take to strengthen it through our entire lives — well into old age. I’ve just touched the surface. Bottom line — after reading this book, I feel like I’m walking around with a sharper set of lenses — about Covid and how to improve and maintain my overall health now and in the future. Which makes this one book a twofer.”

C “In this book by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, he explains some of the mistakes that were made in responding to the Covid 19 pandemic, and discusses how we can be better prepared for the next inevitable pandemic. The book has nine main chapters, and about 251 pages in the digital version, not including the Notes sections.

(Note – the Audible book is also narrated by Dr. Gupta, which is a nice touch. I always appreciate it when an author reads their own book for the audiobook version, as it seems more personal, and you know that the different parts of the text are emphasized correctly.)

In the Introduction, Dr. Gupta recalls sitting with Francis Ford Coppola on New Year’s Eve 2019 and discussing the new virus detected in Wuhan, China. He compares the pandemic that followed to the fictional pandemic from the movie Contagion, a film in which he had role playing himself. He also explains that during the early stages of the pandemic, our government responded to the situation by using influenza modeling, which turned out to be a critical error because the asymptomatic transmission of this new virus meant that many people were infectious without showing symptoms.

In the first half of the book, Dr. Gupta discusses the tragedies of the current pandemic. He explains the phenomenon of “empathy fatigue”, an overall decrease in compassion as the death count rises. He gives examples of specific tragic cases, and explains the complications in dealing with a virus that affects people in drastically different ways. He describes the importance of establishing a supply chain and source materials for PPE and testing kits, the financial cost of preparing for a pandemic, and the unfortunate effects of politics on the response. There are several charts and graphs showing infection rates and other statistics, as Dr. Gupta discusses the differences in the government response in different countries. He covers early deceptions and lack of information sharing by the Chinese government, and the mistakes that were made by the American government, like the delay in acquiring testing kits. He explores the history of viruses, the effects of viruses on human DNA, and the “lab leak” theory for the origin of Covid-19. Dr. Gupta explains the process of developing a vaccine, describes the functions of the different parts of the immune system, and the costs of the different “anti-vaxx” movements over the years. He also debunks the “Top 10 Myths” about vaccines.

In the second half of the book, Gupta focuses more on “becoming pandemic P.R.O.O.F.”. He writes a chapter for each of the letters in that acronym: Plan ahead, Rethink and rewire your brain, Optimize health, Organize family, and Fight for the future. In these chapters he gives specific tips and advice, from stockpiling goods for your “Pandemic Prep Kit”, to navigating a “risk spectrum”, to different ways to boost your immune system.

Overall, I found this book to be very interesting and informative. Dr. Gupta’s assessments of how to be better prepared as a nation were very insightful, and his explanations of the immune system and vaccine developments were very clear and concise. I appreciated his tips about how individuals and families can be better prepared and protected, and he has an extensive list of notes and references at the end of the book for anyone looking for more information.”

RTM “I have enjoyed for years Dr. Gupta’s clear and forthright presentations as CNN’s medical reporter. In his new book, he brings these qualities to a comprehensive analysis of COVID. In 251 pages, Dr. Gupta packs a lot of information, including the possible origins of the virus, how it spread so quickly, why our (in the USA) institutions failed to halt the spread, how the remarkable vaccine was developed, and ideas to prevent this kind of catastrophe from happening again. As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Gupta uses his expertise to present useful information about how individuals can use their brains (quite literally) to better evaluate the risks and rewards of behaviors relevant to surviving a pandemic. My one criticism of this book is that Dr. Gupta gives excessive attention to the possibility that COVID originated in a lab because of its uncanny ability to infect humans. A recent NY Times article (Oct 12, 2021) discusses research on bats which shows how coronaviruses can evolve in the wild to infect humans. The scary implication of this research is that more viruses of this type are coming. Despite this criticism, however, I think Dr. Gupta’ ideas offer a path for a better future concerning this dire threat to humanity. I just hope that the key decisionmakers in government respond with effective actions.”
