Attributes of When Giants Ruled the Sky PDF

Nearly everything people know about airships is wrong. Few realize that prior to the Hindenburg disaster airships transported passengers without a single casualty for more than 20 years, a record unmatched by any other form of transportation. When Giants Ruled the Sky PDF

When Giants Ruled the Sky  tells the true but little-known story of the USS Macon (ZRS-5), the world’s largest, most expensive and most technologically advanced airship of her day, and the four men responsible for conceiving, designing, building, and flying her. In doing so it reveals how the American airship came within a hair’s breadth of replacing planes, trains, and ocean liners as the dominant form of long-distance transportation, and exactly what went wrong, a tale of physical courage, engineering acumen, ugly politicking and two egregious disasters.

The Writers

John J. Geoghegan specializes in reporting on unusual inventions that fail in the marketplace despite their innovative nature. He helped popularize the term “white elephant technology” (WETech) to describe these inventions and has written about them for the “New York Times” Science section, WIRED, “Smithsonian Air & Space,” “Popular Science,” and the “San Francisco Chronicle” Sunday Magazine among other publications.

His most recent book, WHEN GIANTS RULED THE SKY: THE BRIEF REIGN AND TRAGIC DEMISE OF THE AMERICAN RIGID AIRSHIP (The History Press, April 2022) tells the little known story of the U.S. Navy’s dirigible program during its two most critical years (April 1933-February 1935). The Navy’s airships, the largest, most expensive, most technologically sophisticated aircraft in their day, could fly for nearly a week at a time without landing, had a range of nearly 10,000 miles, and carried a crew of 80 at a time when most airplanes carried only a few passengers, had a 300 mile range, and crashed with alarming frequency. As a result, the American rigid airship was considered the future of long distance transportation.Even more remarkable, the Navy’s rigid airships were flying aircraft carriers able to launch and retrieve the aircraft they housed in mid-flight.

Mr. Geoghegan also authored OPERATION STORM: JAPAN’S TOP SECRET SUBMARINES AND IT’S PLAN TO CHANGE THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR II (Crown, 2013), which “The Wall Street Journal” called, “a fascinating, meticulously researched and deft account.” Mr. Geoghegan also shepherded into production and served as Technical Consultant and co-writer for the PBS documentary “Japanese SuperSub,” which was based on his articles about Japan’s I-400 class of submarines. The “New York Times called “Japanese SuperSub,” “consistently… fascinating history.”

Finally, Mr. Geoghegan is the author of a memoir: HEAR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW: A TRUE STORY OF LOVE, HEARING LOSS, HEARTBREAK, AND REDEMPTION (New Haven Publishing, 2018), which recounts what happened when he woke up one morning only to find he’d become deaf overnight.

Mr. Geoghegan began his career as a Special Correspondent for the “New York Times,” worked in “Connecticut” magazine’s editorial department, and was Editor of “The Connecticut Business Journal.” He currently serves as Director of the The SILOE Research Institute’s archival division in Marin County, California.

This may be THE BEST book on the USS Akron and the USS Macon!
May 7, 2022

I’ve always been fascinated by airships, but I knew practically nothing about the USS Akron nor the USS Macon. However, after having read John J. Geoghegan’s excellent book: OPERATION STORM, I was excited to learn last October that he had written a book on airships: WHEN GIANTS RULED the SKY, and I pre-ordered it immediately. I’ve not been disappointed. Like OPERATION STORM, WHEN GIANTS RULED THE SKY has become another of my all-time favorite “history of technology” books. Like a giant beautifully cut diamond all facets of the development of the USS Akron and the USS Macon are presented with crystal clarity, so that this great documentary reads almost like a techno-thriller. That is, this is a great book on a great subject by a great author! If you’re interested at all in the history of airships, you should read this book.

A Fine Story, Well Told
May 24, 2022

Long before World War II, America’s military feared that its country’s possessions in the Pacific were vulnerable to attack by the Japanese Navy. One Admiral’s solution: build a fleet of dirigibles to scout the ocean from the sky. At that time, dirigibles (a/k/a airships) could stay aloft for months, carry large crews, and had transcontinental range. And the ones built for the Navy were the aircraft carriers of the sky: they carried planes that could take off, scout for miles, and return safely to the airship. Had this program succeeded, which it almost did, it could have changed the course of history. When Giants Ruled the Sky is both a history of airships and a story of how people can mess up anything and everything. Those without a firm understanding of the situation gave orders and refused to listen to those who knew more. Those who knew more did speak up, but not loudly enough. And almost everyone put their own interest first. It all makes for one great read. If you are fond of saying: “Everything works out for the best,” this book will offer you another perspective.

An excellent, much needed book.

Very little is written about the Akron and Macon and these magnificent airships are almost always overlooked. When Giants Ruled the Sky goes a long way to correcting that. Geoghegan has researched his subject thoroughly and presents his conclusions clearly and in a very readable manner.

This is an important work and belongs not only in every LTA collection, but also in every aviation library. Highly recommended.
