Good sketches for practice, some content issues
May 24, 2021

I’m relatively inexperienced with watercolors, and picked this book up partly for tips, and mostly to have something to paint on nights when I don’t feel up to sketching first. For that purpose, it’s pretty good. The paper is rave-worthy, and the sketches are varied and pretty interesting. There are some negative things about content and layout, though.

PROS: Sketches are big and mostly cool. Great quality paper. End products are pretty fun.

CONS: Tiny, pale font is unreadable, so instructions aren’t helpful. Too much precise color mixing. Extensive use of white.

OVERALL: It’s okay. I don’t regret buying, but only because of the sketches. Dana Fox’s books are slightly better overall if I had to pick one.

DETAILS:
I don’t know how good the instructions are, because the book is practically illegible. It’s printed in a tiny font in a sort of dark gray on off-white. If you don’t have perfect vision, it’s almost more work than it’s worth. The sketches are fine if you don’t need the instructions, or have the patience to work through reading them under a bright light.

She provides mixing recipes for 26 colors. A lot of the images require 7-8 colors, and most of those are mixed, so you can end up mixing ~20 colors per picture. If you don’t plan to mix them once and keep them all around in a palette, that’s a lot of work for “I don’t have energy to sketch tonight.”

Also, I’m not one of the purists who thinks you shouldn’t use opaque white (giving you something more like gouache). However, be aware that literally 2/3 of her mixes use a lot of white. If your goal is to practice watercolors, you should know that using white this way is fairly unusual, as it blunts the transparency that makes layering possible. I’ve closely matched most of those colors with fewer, more traditional paints.

Mixed Feelings about the Color Mixing
June 24, 2021

I am fairly new to watercolors but not painting or color theory in general. I bought this to learn techniques for watercolor. But often I don’t have the time to draw something in order to paint it, so for that this little book is good so that you can jump in and try various techniques. The book also contains quality paper so your efforts will hold up. I wasn’t in love with some of the sketches though, and after a few of them they felt a little redundant because the style remains that of the artist/author. After a while I was bored of the subject matter and the always hidden faces of the ladies in the sketches. Including a few sketches from other artists would have expanded the concept .

What I liked: Good paper, provided sketches to color are big enough to use average size brushes and not tiny detailed ones. Good explanations of wet-on-wet and other techniques.

What I disliked – and why I only give it a 3 star rating: One of the first things one learns about watercolor is the beautiful transparency of the medium. Any video, book, or class in watercolor emphasizes the use of vibrant transparent colors and encourages one to eschew gouache or other white paint – and advise you to save white areas in the paper itself for highlights by using masking or preserving it by painting around it. In most cases white paint or gouache is added – if used at all – at the end of a painting to clean up areas or add back white space that was inadvertently lost. But here we have white watercolor paint being added to something like 65% of the color mixes/recipes provided. The use of so much white creates the pastels which this artist likes to use, but unfortunately decreases the transparency of the paint so that the white paper underneath cannot shine through and provide the sparkle inherent to the medium. A better practice might be to demonstrate the dilution of a given hue with lots of water to create a pastel, with glazing as needed.

I also agree with another reviewer that the font in this book was too light and small. The space allocated to practice mixing up the colors as instructed was adequate, but the font is definitely too light.

Just do yourself a favor and buy it. You won’t regret it.

I hardly ever write reviews. I know everyone says that but mine are few and far between. You have to impress me beyond belief for me to actually remember to come back and fill out all the little boxes.

Just do it. Just buy this. I love watercolor…not the biggest fan of the prep though. I don’t always want to draw it out and then add some ink and finally get to start painting. This is phenomenal. The pictures are gorgeous, the paper is fantastic quality, there are a million tips on mixing colors and different techniques. It is my favorite thing I’ve bought for myself in absolute ages. I truly hope Sarah does more of these workbooks. I genuinely believe everyone can enjoy this regardless of their skill level.

Amazing!

First of all, I love everything Sarah does and she can never go wrong in my book. She’s a Seattle local so it makes me even more happy to be supporting someone literally up the street from me!

This book is breathtakingly beautiful. You can tell she put in so much love and thought into this book. The color recipes are to die for, you can paint directly in the book because it’s printed on this thick watercolor paper, or you can trace the art and practice outside for your own personal pieces to practice over and over.

The print on the pages looks like legit watercolor and even have a hint of shimmer on some of them (I swear) ☺️ I don’t know how they printed these but they are so pretty.

Highly recommend for any skill range! Such a fun book to come back to over and over again to keep practicing your watercolor skills or just for the paint color recipes alone – hands down worth it to know how to mix these paints.

Now stop delaying the inevitable and go buy this book 🥰

Great starting point for water colour painting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 31, 2022

This is a lovely book. Instructions are easy to follow, well illustrated too. Best of all, each “paint your own” page is on good quality paper and with simple shapes to embellish. There are colour suggestions and tips for each project. An ideal starting point for learning how to paint with water colours. Looking forward to working my way through the book.
