Vivian Meier’s Last Self Portrait

I hired Vivian Meier for my Mother in Oak Park, Illinois before she went into a nursing home. I was surprised to see her last self portrait which I recognized as taken in the house I grew up in- into our dining room mirror standing in the archway with our living room chair, lamp and drapes in the background. A familiar trinket cabinet is on the dining room wall next to her. I read that she asked for a few things before she left- two Madame Alexander dolls and a military jacket. My sister allowed her to take them. I wish we still had the military jacket which was my Dad’s World War I jacket. He trained to be a World War I pilot but never flew in combat because the war ended. Vivian was an eccentric genius who I felt fortunate to have met. Her photographs are out of this world. Ann Mark’s portrayal and research of Vivian’s life are extraordinary. I found the book absolutely fascinating.

VM is one of my favorite photographers! And this book gives an incredibly deep dive into her family history and her life and the story of her post Morten fame. W/ numerous supporting photographs, and some examples of her art. I was impressed by the depth of the research the author accomplished.

Ann Marks has investigated virtually every aspect of the life of Maier, and combed through the Maier archive to put together this beautiful, well-written book. She reveals Maier as a troubled soul whose art transcended her life. The well-presented photographs are worth the price of admission alone. Fascinating!

Following the bread crumbs with dedication and intelligence, Ann Marks was amazingly able to piece together the details of Maier’s life and photographic works, and convey her quest and findings in this book with well-written, easy to read prose. It is clear that Marks herself experienced an incredible journey in solving this mystery and compiling this book. Well done.

As a psychologist, I found Marks’ analysis to be comprehensive and intriguing. Deep documentation way beyond what I knew before I read this book. I have thousands of photo books and I am a street photographer, but I do not consider Maier’s photos to be compelling. Her voluminous selfies get boring after awhile as she is so self absorbed. I like her method of hunting for images, especially life on urban streets. If I did not know about her unique reputation and saw these photos “blind,” I would not find her to be extraordinary. If you want to see her photos in larger format, there are now three hardbound books that serve that purpose.

The Forgotten Genius of Photography

This is the remarkable story of how a remarkable street photographer, through her own dereliction of self-promotion and commercialization, was totally unknown until long after her death. Her images, from the 40’s through the 60’s, remain highly modern in their impromptu imaging and content. I found it quite useful in spurring me to promote my own work beyond a local environment and to create a web-wide articulation of my own art.

A comprehensive biography of a very talented and mysterious photographer

If you are aware of and interested in Vivian Maier this is an essential read. It’s thoroughly researched and comprehensive in scope, even covering the complex copyright issues that arose after her death. The input of experts has been sought to shed light on her personality and health issues. It’s copiously illustrated with Vivian’s pictures as you would hope. To facilitate this a high grade of glossy paper has been used throughout, rather than just for ‘picture pages’ as many pictures ar set in text to enrich and complement the narrative. This makes for a beautifully produced book that is a ‘keeper’.

It seems churlish to criticise a book that I enjoyed so much, but the writer is a researcher not an author/ biographer. Also there are many Americanisms (of course, writer is American after all) and there is much photographic jargon and terminology (not all of it correct) which may be lost on someone who does not have the background. Even so this should not deter a reader who will be rewarded by learning about Vivian’ remarkable story.

This is an incredibly insightful book which I throughly enjoyed. The caveat of course, is that being the very private person that she was, much of it is conjecture, speculation and anecdotal, backed with some non-empirical analysis from scientific experts, which adds an interestingly dark assessment of Maier’s personality and behavioural characteristics. A definite read for anyone interested in the enigma that is Vivian Maier. The book is well put together but here is where the ‘fifth star’ is lost, the images particularly the black and white were pretty hard in terms of ‘study’ because of their size. I found a backlit magnifier did help a little, but if you’re buying this for her images only, then there are probably better publications out there. The narrative is interesting though and I have no regrets buying it.
