STEVEN GUNDRY MD, F.A.C.S., F.A.C.C., is a cum laude graduate of Yale University with special honors in Human Biological and Social Evolution. After graduating Alpha Omega Alpha from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine, Dr. Steven Gundry completed residencies in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan and served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institutes of Health for years. There, he invented devices that reverse the cell death seen in acute heart attacks; variations of these devices subsequently became the Gundry™ Retrograde Cardioplegia Cannula. It has become the world’s most widely used device of its kind to protect the heart from damage during open-heart surgery. After completing a fellowship in congenital heart surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, in London, Dr. Gundry was recruited as Professor and Chairman of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center. There, he and his partner, Leonard Bailey, pioneered infant and pediatric heart transplantation. Together, they have performed more such transplants than any other transplant surgeons in the world.

During his tenure at Loma Linda, Dr. Gundry pioneered the field of xenotransplantation, the study of how the genes of one species react to the transplanted heart of a foreign species. He was one of the original twenty investigators of the first FDA-approved implantable left ventricular assist device (a kind of artificial heart). Dr. Gundry is also the inventor of the Gundry Ministernomy, the widely used minimally invasive approach to aortic- or mitral-valve repair, the Gundry Lateral Tunnel, a “living” tissue that can rebuild parts of the heart in children with severe congenital heart malformations; and the Skoosh™ venous cannula, the most widely used cannula in minimally invasive heart operations.

One of the fathers of robotic surgery, and a consultant to Computer Motion (now Intuitive Surgical), Dr. Steven Gundry received early FDA approval to use robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery-bypass and mitral-valve operations. He holds patents on devices for connecting blood vessels and coronary artery bypasses without sutures, as well as for repairing the mitral valve without the need for sutures or a heart-lung machine. He has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Artificial Internal Organs (ASIAO) and was a founding board member and treasurer of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS). He recently completed two successive elected terms as President of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Desert Division.

Dr. Gundry has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the American Surgical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the College of Chest Physicians. He is a member of numerous other surgical and medical societies. As a medical researcher, Dr. Gundry has published three hundred articles, chapters, and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on surgical, immunology, genetics, nutrition, plant-based diets, and lipid investigations.

In 2002, Dr. Gundry met someone who would change the trajectory of his career… and life. He crossed paths with an “inoperable” patient named “Big Ed”. Using a combination of dietary changes and nutraceutical supplements — Big Ed lost weight and cleared most of his arterial blockages. An obese, chronic “diet” failure himself, Dr. Gundry adapted his Yale University thesis to design a diet for himself based on evolutionary genetic coding.

On this diet, he lost weight — to the tune of 70 pounds — and reversed his own ailments, such as migraines, pre-diabetic status, and arthritis. C “This book has ten main chapters of text, with a total of 180 pages. At the end of the book there is a recipe section, with 21 recipes in total. There is also an Appendix with a list of supplements.

In the first few chapters Dr. Gundry discusses the history behind the science of ketogenic diets, and the misconceptions that have led to inconsistent results when following these diet plans. He explains the function of the mitochondria, cellular respiration, and the Krebs cycle. He uses clever analogies to describe the metabolic processes, and summarizes more complex interactions like mitchondrial uncoupling.

Starting in Chapter 5 Dr. Sundry reveals his “Keys to the Keto Code”: Intermittent fasting, polyphenols, dietary fiber, fermented foods, polyamines, cold and hot temperatures, and red light therapy. There are chapters that discuss MCT fats, heart and brain health, and what foods to avoid. Chapter 9 has an extensive foods list, with different recommended foods divided into categories. Chapter 10 gives advice on a plan to move towards a healthier diet over a few weeks.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book. Dr. Sundry does a good job of explaining moderately complex biological processes in language that is fairly easy to understand. He has a history of challenging conventional wisdom, and there is a bit of that in this book as well; although nothing he suggests is extreme or radical. I appreciate the explanations of the research he has done into this topic, and I look forward to trying some of the recipes at the end of the book.”

MC “The title is misleading since this is an anti-keto book. The author makes incorrect claims, such as the keto diet does not help with weight loss and it does not help with type 2 diabetes. There are so many examples of people being helped with the keto diet to ignore. I have personally benefited from the diet. The author does not provide any evidence for his incorrect assertions. He claims that ketones are a poor source of energy and are primarily signaling molecules, which is another reason to avoid the keto diet.

The author repeatedly argues “keto experts say X, but the reality is Y.” These are straw-man arguments as I have never heard any keto experts say what the author claims the “experts” say. The author does not name the “experts” he is referring to.

After bashing the keto diet, the author recommends the diet he has recommended in his prior books, with intermittent fasting added. I have read all of Dr. Gundry’s books, and this is the worst one.

I listened to the audiobook, which is a good format for this material. The supplemental PDF is on the Harper Collins Web site. He reads the URL at the beginning. The PDF is just recipes and a list of food, so it is pointless. I was hoping the PDF would have scientific paper citations for the absurd claims he makes, but it does not.

A better book to understand the low-carb diet is The Obesity Code by Jason Fung.”

It really delves into the science behind keto, and shows you that the real power of keto lies in the power of “mitochondrial uncoupling,” a process in which a cell actually wastes energy and calories, resulting in weight loss! Ketones is one way in which your body can be triggered to waste energy and lose weight. However, Dr. Gundry offeres 8 other ways in which one can trigger the body to lose weight besides keto: (1) intermittent fasting, (2) eating foods with polyphenols, (3) eating foods with lots of fiber, (4) eating fermented foods, (5) eating foods with polyamines, (6) exposing your body to short bursts of cold temperatures, (7) exposing your body to short bursts of hot temperatures, (8) using red light therapy. My wife and I are in our 60’s, and we have been living a keto lifestyle for 3 years now. We absolutely love keto, and we do it the right way. Keto can be done the wrong way (i.e. not eating enough nutritious vegetables, not eating enough fiber to feed your intestinal bacteria, and eating chemical-filled nonorganic meats and cheeses). My wife and I daily eat 2 avocados, 1 cup of organic steamed broccoli, 3/4 cup walnuts, and a 3-egg omelet cooked in coconut oil. We also take Dr. Gundry’s suggestion of intermittent fasting by intermittent fasting; we actually take the radical approach of eating only once a day, to give our body the maximum benefit of intermittent fasting. We also take Dr. Gundry’s suggestion of drinking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before our meal. Dr. Gundry has helped us take our keto lifestyle to the next level. We have literally been able to rid our body completely of all our prior health issues: prediabetes, low thyroid, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, arthritis, psoriasis, and allergies. We weigh what we weighed in high school, and we actually feel better when we felt during our teen age years. Dr. Gundry is a genius. All his claims are backed with science. He includes all his sources (i.e. medical studies) to back up his findings. My wife and I recommend this book to everyone who wants to improve their health!!!”
Paula “Beautifully written book by a doctor with the highest credentials and a lovely sense of humour.

More than that, I found that this book contains the keto code I was looking for – a balanced, nutritious combo of foods that make for a delicious diet. Based on up to date research it, it provides detailed explanations of how different foods affect gut health a mitochondria – look after them properly and they’ll look after you! It also goes into the benefits of intermittent fasting and the fact that it’s no longer necessary to count calories.

I so enjoyed reading this book, laughing out loud and finding out the secrets of great health.
