Errors, missing information, poor quality printing

I use the Travell and Simons work for performing Clinical Thai Bodywork. I use the flip chart in both spiral bound and kindle versions, and I also use the wall charts. The problems listed here apply to all three products. I only reviewed the material for the 13 specific muscles highlighted in blue (see photo). You cannot rely on these products without referring back to the original printed volumes if you want to be accurate and not miss patterns. Trapezius – you will need to refer to both page 1 “Trapezi” and page 4 “Trapezius” for the full pattern. However TrP 7 is not illustrated at all (see photos which will show the flip chart version first which often contains my revisions and then the original work from Travell & Simons Volume 1). The pattern for Scalenus Minimus is not shown. The Serratus Anterior referral to the medial scapula is not shown. The Infraspinatus referral to medial of the scapula is not shown. The color registration of the red referral patterns is often shifted resulting in accurate representations of the patterns examples include: Pect Minor, Serratus Anterior, Latissimus Dorsi, Subscapularis. This is a poor representation of the original work containing errors, omissions of important relevant information, and poor print quality that misrepresents the pain patterns. You should not use these reference materials for clinical work without independent review so you know what is missing and what is shown inaccurately.

My wife has been a massage therapist for some time and has found trigger point information extremely useful in her line of work. Unfortunately, most of the good books/material on the subject matter are a bit pricey. We bought this for her when it was on sale as a “quick reference guide” and while the information in it looks to be extremely useful, as others have mentioned these “Flip Charts” are *huge*, so don’t expect to carry this around with you. Each page of this flip chart is basically a full 11″x 17″ page (portrait oriented). The chart in its entirety is 13 pages double side printed (not including the “cover” or “stand”) on 11″x 17″ card stock with a plastic spiral binding at the top. None of the pages are laminated (someone else mentioned the cover was), so while they are card stock, it’s hard to say whether they would stand up to much abuse or to the oils or lotions that a therapist would use in their daily line of work. In addition to the 13 pages, there is a “cover” sheet and a “stand” made up from the same card stock. The cover is single side printed. and the stand is blank and a double sized piece folded to take the equivalent of two pages of space. The back “stand” is folded so that it can be expanded to form a triangular stand. The idea is reasonable, but for something this size it’s not probably not something that would hold up to having pages turned single handed without falling over.
As expensive as this was, I want to make sure my wife can really use it day to day without having to replace it. so while it’s not a cheap option, we are probably looking to have it laminated and re-bound by a copy/office center (at roughly $75).
Even not being already laminated, we still believe it was worth the investment.

Large flip charts, I thought they would be laminated. But only the front page is. So they aren’t very durable, so to use as a stand up flip chart for daily use and display, they will last very long.
As a reference to be stored and used occasionally and for study, they are great.
I was hoping to use as a flip chart..

This is used frequently in my practice as a therapeutic massage practitioner. I work on many injuries, rehab work, unidentified sources of pain and discomfort.. And this series of charts definitely helps to sort out the origins of pain.

This is larger than I thought it would be but overall it is great. The illustrations are great and easy to read. The slick cover is great also so you don’t have to worry about tearing the pages easily. Also, the stand is good even though I probably won’t use it much. But good to have that option. Love how the Trigger Point marked with the “X” is very visible as well as the red dots for the referred pain. Very helpful.

Not at all what I had expected, should have sent it back. Too pricey for what you get. Too cumbersome to use when I’m in with a patient, though it is good to use for patient teaching, if you can find what you are looking for.

I ordered the flip chart to help clients have a visual and also a quick reminder for me. I gave three stars because it seems to big and cumbersome to use efficiently. Also, it had only the basic and obvious trigger points pictured. I wish I would have purchased a hanging poster if I only needed the basic info. I will probably just stick with the book at this point. The chart was a bit of a disappointment for the expense.

Diagrams excellent, however I felt in some of the refernce zone it referred to as a solid red line, to me should have said the muscles, but other diagrams do have muscles and the flip chart is very expensive so I felt it was a little incomplete with some muscle information.

The Flip Chart is something I both demonstrate to my patients and also refer to daily.
Dental schools need to teach this stuff and few dentists have good knowledge on referred pain and trigger points.

This is an excellent quick resource for massage therapists. It compliments the books well. As with other Travell and Simons’ resources, it’s a bit expensive.
