I have taught and mentored high school teens for over 25 years, and have raised two daughters of my own. “Just as you are” is a book I could have used over and over again, and one that I will surely recommend now to my students and to school counselors and administrators. Michelle and Kelly Skeen take their readers on a journey towards self-understanding and self-acceptance, guiding them along the way with an engaging prose that is authentic, intelligent, and never condescending. The many personal accounts illustrate the universality of the feelings, emotions, and behaviors that the authors unpack for their readers. The format is exceptionally helpful, including “Try This!” excercises, “Putting It All Together” summaries, and guideposts along the way reminding readers where they have been and what lies ahead. A great tool for personal growth!

My favorite things about the book:
1. Every point the authors make is expanded upon with personal stories from other teens. It made it all feel more real.
2. The book is scattered with a few dozen thought exercises and journaling prompts, which were really helpful in figuring out how to apply its lessons to my own life.
