Alexandra Billings is among the first Transgender women to have played a Transgender character on television and is perhaps best known for her role as Davina Rejennae in Joey Soloway’s drama Transparent. She also just finished up a role in Wicked on Broadway. She’s simply a force in This Time for me PDF

In Alexandra’s singular and creative voice, she tells the story of what it was like to start transitioning several decades ago, before the word “Transgender” was commonly used. She forged an identity for herself in a time when she had no openly Trans role models, no path to follow. It wasn’t until she came across the term “female impersonator” in an ad for a club in downtown Chicago that she realized there were other people like her. This Time for me PDF

If you recognize the name of this memoir, you likely love musical theater. This Time for Me gets its title from a line in the song “Rose’s Turn” from the musical Gypsy. Like Rose, Alexandra gets her turn to tell her endlessly fascinating story and provides a highly personal glimpse into queer history.

Alexandra Billings was born a male, named Scott, but she never felt like one. From her earliest beginnings, she felt like a girl, dressing in her mother’s clothing, dancing and singing the tunes she loved. Her mother, Mimi was fearful that her husband would beat Scott if he knew of her tendencies. Dad was an ex-Iraq soldier, CIA taught to kill the bad guys. Scott was, of course, bullied all throughout his school years, but he managed to find a place for himself, and met his now wife in high school.

This is tough story to read if you are squeamish, the life of a trans woman, transitioning from male to female, and her life as a prostitute. But it was her only way of making a living, and, at times she enjoyed it. The clothes, makeup, the wigs, the dances and singing. The life on stage as somebody else. Alexandra was the first woman of color to transition, and she was noted for this. She was loved and abused, but she found her place. She does not glorify, nor does she put herself down for her work as a woman of transition. She is who she is, she blazed a trail.

Along the way, Alexandra met the Holoways, Faith and Joey. Their father was transitioning, and they wanted some assistance in understanding and helping him along the way. Eventually, they wrote a television script about her journey, and the TV program ‘Transition’ was born. Jeffrey Tambor was the star. Alexandra was hired in a role. Four years in, the abuse and temper shown by Jeffrey Tambor was brought forward, and the show was cancelled. However, Alexandra moved on to other parts in show business.

Alexandra calls her life an Accidental Revolution, and so it goes. Blazing trails wherever she goes. A true revolutionist in all senses of the word. Well written with surprises in every chapter.

468 pages of self indulgent, I am the victim, “cis gendered” are bad, I can be rude and without regard for others because I am tortured. Argh. Having read more than a few really good memoirs or biographies about transgenders and their trials, This one is just…

A powerful book with great sensitivity and pathos

“This Time for Me: A Memoir” by Alexandra Billings is another of those stories that need to be told not only for the author, but also for the rest of us who are far too often biased by cultural or religious opinions with no real validity. From her earliest childhood, Alex,…

Alexandra Billings spares nothing in examining her life’s path that led her from being scorned and beaten to being celebrated and recognized for her artistry, activism, and humanity. The book is sometimes raw, sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, slightly dishy, and…

(Reads negative reviews:) This is someone whining about cis white males! Well, that seems an oversimplification. She’s also talking about family, friends, johns, drugs, and people in general who don’t know what to do with
