A 2022 book release about the 2009 Avatar movie? Why is this happening now?
June 1, 2022

This book had to come out there in 2009 along with the movie. There is not much more art or information here than what you found in the Blu ray extras of the movie at that time. I was expecting something newer since the second part of the movie is approaching. just some new aquatic animal data. not much info on the future of the franchise. A little more of the same, for a fan of the movie like me it’s not bad, but it will disappoint a bit.

If you’re expecting art and concepts, you’ll be disappointed

I bought this feeling super excited about exploring the world of Pandora, but what is really disappointing about this book is their mostly screenshots from the movie, or cutouts from the movie. Their is a couple unseen photos but nothing special beside a couple new animals. That’s it. It was really disappointing as a fan of the movie and world, I expected more conceptual art of the creatures, along with a bit more information, rather than just a little paragraph and that is all. Thankfully it isn’t that expensive, so it won’t break the bank in terms of collectible books, but I wouldn’t recommend it, you’ll find all the information you need on a Wiki that is in this book, not like what you expect, with exclusive never before seen artwork, or upcoming creatures (although their is one or two, but not many), all the flora and fauna life, how they live etc. You get very little. Can’t say how disappointed I am in this as a guide to this world, as a ”visual exploration”, it really doesn’t live up to that expectation. More like ”screenshots exploration”.

A pretty book, but lacks substance

When it was released over 10 years ago, Avatar blew my mind. I truly couldn’t believe what I was seeing. A movie so heavily reliant on CGI and yet not feeling like an ‘animation’ – the directors had created an alien world and alien species that felt very real.

This book dives into that computer generated world and showcases some of the individual plants, aliens, and environments we see in the movie, and some others we do not as well. 10 years since release, the CGI isn’t quite as impressive now as it was then, but the bright colours, impossible landforms, and creative animals make for an enjoyable picture book. Everything is well laid out and although some of the images are a little smaller than I’d like, it’s enjoyable.

The chapters in the book cover the geography and geology, trees and plants, creatures, and the Na’vi’s biology and culture and society. It’s a good balance and I felt that all areas of the movie were pretty well covered. There’s a useful index at the end of the book, so if you’re looking for something specific you’ll quickly be able to find it.

Where I think the book falls a little short is in the descriptions and text in general. Everything is very ‘surface-level’. You get a couple of paragraphs on each animal, plant or area, but there isn’t really a ‘deep-dive’ into anything. For most casual fans, this will be fine. However, if you’re seeking out a book on the subject then you’re probably a pretty dedicated fan craving more information. On the flip side of this, the book is called a ‘Visual’ Exploration and so it’s hard to criticise too strongly as they aren’t promising that deep-dive I was craving.

Overall, this is a lovely looking book that will be enjoyed by Avatar fans ahead of the second movie.

Avatar is a film many people – including myself – have on their favourites list; when the movie came out it was supported by an “Art Of” book which was badly produced (some buyers reported pages upside down and the reproduction quality of the digital images had poor resolution).
I had hoped that this DK volume would be the kind of in-depth guide the first book wasn’t, but although it has much better illustrations, it doesn`t have any of the initial concept drawings or design plans artists and designers buy such books for.
This is a rather thin, though reasonably large-scale volume, but it merely provides a series of stills from the movie and a listing of flora, fauna, hardware, characters and planet environments without any information on the actual process of arriving at their end design.
It has a nice enough layout with box-out information texts, but all relating to the finished item within the context of the story – nothing about it’s creation.
As it is, it’s a decent enough reference guide for adults and children, but anyone curious about the how and why of the cinematic production process will find it lacking.
I am a little disappointed in it.

A new release book on the movie Avatar? In 2022?

So Avatar came out back in 2009, and now, in 2022, a new book has been released DK. Okay, they’re still releasing books of the original Star Wars movie, but I don’t feel that Avatar is the cultural phenomenon that Star Wars is, even though it smashed box office records at the time.

I had to have a look as I enjoyed the movie, and own the 3D Blu-ray of it.

The book arrived all well and good and is of the same high quality of other DK releases, packed full of photos (from the movie) and titbits of information. Nothing you’ve not seen in similar/previous releases, asides from a “sneak peak” at the future of Avatar.

It’s a decent reference guide, it’s a shame that it doesn’t go “behind the scenes” and show concept art and story boards, photos of models and what not, I think that would be more interesting.

Still, £12.99 gets you this book and that’s not such a shabby deal…

The Avatar universe is an example of comprehensive worldbuilding, and this book reflects that. It resonates passion for the project and shows just how much thought James Cameron and his team put into making this world feel as realistic as possible. It’s not only a great resource for fans of this story, highlighting many aspects of the Avatar universe which are impossible to gather from only watching the film (and even giving a little insight into the upcoming sequels), but also a solid example of how to present a worldbuilding document on any fictional project.

The book contains chapters on Pandora’s environment, plantlife, animal life, the Na’vi species and their culture, the humans and their technology, and locations of note.

Some of the images are sadly not as crisp as they could be, but this is probably a result of taking screenshots directly from film footage.
