Excellent compilation of chapters
August 9, 2018

This is a textbook, meaning it is a highly annotated collection of 19 chapters by 31 scientists on various topics about the evolution of neurological systems. Dr. Shepherd has assembled an excellent selection of contributors and the topic is fascinating. There is a lot of detail as the chapters unfurl the story of what we have learned about the nervous system, from the most primitive to the complex minds of primates. I’m not sure that a non-scientist would get bogged down in the terminology, but it was delightful for me. There has been so much new and fascinating information since I was in graduate school, I was fascinated with it all. Great work by all the authors and a pleasure to learn.
My only issue is the references are written out by authors’ names for each footnote. It can be really tedious to read when half the paragraph consists of long parentheses with authors’ names separating the text. Much prefer numbered references that are easier to skim over.

Very interesting modern take on evolutionary neuroscience….
August 15, 2018

As odd as I may seem in writing this, I read this book out of general interest. I am not a neuroscientist nor am I in graduate school. I was able, nevertheless, to understand all of the chapters in this book, which I found very interesting. There were so many good topics! How did such a complex sensory-associational-cognitive organ such as the Homo brain evolve? What are the complexities of investigation? What do we know about the neurology of other creatures?

I am not sure how the professional audience will review this book, but I found it quite well written and informative.

One of the rare sources in its domain

Sometimes, it appears complicated (to me at least) but a very nice book in this developing domain. The evolutionary process is explained in detail. Recommended.
