Terry L. Wahls, M.D. is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. In addition she is a clinical researcher, studying the use of diet and lifestyle interventions in autoimmune and other chronic disease states. West “It’s been 4 months since I started Wahls Protocol. Here’s my story.

I’m 42 years old and was perfectly healthy until all of the sudden in June 2019, I wasn’t. It was summer, extremely humid – we were dumping a gallon of water from our dehumidifier every 6 hours. I was a shell of myself personality wise, no highs or lows but not depressed. It was like there was in inferno inside my body. I couldn’t deal with the heat and humidity. Nobody else seemed to think it was extreme but I was losing my mind, burning up. I was extremely fatigued, extremely! had to rest after being up moving around for 5 minutes. My 2 & 4 year old kids would find me in bed 10-15 times a day. Across 1 Isolated day, I felt dizzy a few times, couldn’t see for a few seconds, for about 20 minutes I could only see about a 6 inch Circular diameter in front of my face and everything around it was blurry. That was it with vision. Within a couple days my right arm from shoulder to finger tips and right leg from top to toes went kind of numb. I couldn’t understand the feeling – it was as if they were asleep and i needed to shake blood circulation back into them. One day I showed my right arm and hand to my husband as it was shaking uncontrollably. The numb right side went on for a few weeks and I went to the Dr. They ran tests and sent me for an immediate MRI that showed nothing. Soon after that, my numb right side dissipated and within hours, both hands & feet were really tingly like a thousand needle pricks. I started feeling a sensation as if something was crawling on my right calf and foot, throughout a few weeks. Then I started experiencing my right hand getting tight when i would open peanut butter, shave my legs, open doors. I would get electrical type shocks up my arm a few times when overworking my right hand. I physically became extremely week. At one point I lost control of my bladder for 1 week, during a particularly high stress time. For 7 months my right side was so numb, I would dream repeatedly that I didn’t have a right arm or leg. I was sent to a Neurologist who ran several tests, MRI’s & lumbar puncture. He found small white blurs on my Brain but nothing definitive and told me to go home, write down what I experience and come back in 1-2 years to redo all the tests to see if there’s enough damage to show evidence for a diagnosis. It was pretty unbelievable. He told me to take 5000 IU’s of D3 each day and look into the Mediterranean diet because eating and resting well could be good for me. At least he did mention it. He surely wasn’t convicted or convicting. Within 4-5 weeks I could barely move my entire spine. I was in so much pain whether sitting, standing or lying down. My 2 & 4 year old would go through the house calling for mommy and find me in bed trying to keep them from seeing me cry. I was exhausted physically, emotionally and mentally. I would get in bed at night and tears would run down my face because I knew how long and hard the night would be and how much i was going to hurt. The exhaustion was so bad, it felt like Like I was carrying a heavy backpack through quicksand to just move from 1 room of the house to another. I tried chiropractic, which has always helped in the past with pregnancy sciatic nerve issues. Didn’t work now. Between the exhaustion and pain, I began to lose hope. I started picturing getting a second household to have somewhere to go through this without burdening my husband and children. I felt elderly, truly fragile and elderly.

Note: After researching, I highly believe the D3 dose I was taking was not absorbing well and was causing calcium to build up in my joints, which is why I couldn’t turn my head or back. Try D3 WITH K2 vitamin that’s oil based and take it with something fatty like an avocado.

I started following Dr. Wahls’ ideas and recommendations a year ago, and have strictly been on her Wahls Paleo Plus for a while now. I supplement with many products, and have now totally gotten used to eating only twice a day, as well as eliminated my sweet tooth! (I admit doing the 21-day Sugar Detox last year probably helped this last part). I now enjoy eating and even cooking more than I ever had before, and my entire family is still reaping the benefits from all this knowledge.

Just to detail a bit more: I follow the Wahls Paleo Plus diet, mixed together with the AIP just to make it a little more challenging. This means no nuts, seeds, nightshades, or coffee, on top of Dr Wahls’ strictest protocol. I also swim every other day, meditate and work my core muscles daily, and sleep 7.5-8.5 hours every night.

Is it worth it? You be the judge: my last relapse was over a year ago, I can now bike for 45minutes and totally withstand heat sensitivity, I can swim for as long as I want to, I walked over 120,000 steps in a week last december during Christmas break (used a pedometer to keep track), I’m sleeping like a baby, and, MOST IMPORTANT: I stopped my MS medication two weeks ago (under my neurologist’s supervision of course, and having sworn to go back on it if my status changes negatively). Today I feel better than ever, and that injection I used to hate and use every week hasn’t been missed for one second.

Dr Wahls, through this book, gave me my life back. I don’t care what other people say or think about this book, I am living proof that these ideas can work. Like I said a year ago: try it, what have you got to lose? And you can gain SO MUCH, you have no idea.”

“I don’t normally write reviews and I dont normally follow diets. However, due to several long term and increasingly random symptoms which the Doctor largely put down to stress and/or menopause, I started to investigate if there may be some link that I was missing. This ultimately led to this book. Having read the whole thing through, given a lack of diagnosis to work with, I went with the 1st level diet with about half the elements of the Paleo diet. The main focus being immediate removal of gluten, dairy and sugar. One of my symptoms had been severe ligament pain for about 12 months in my right leg that on a bad day meant I couldn’t walk very well. Physio hadn’t touched it. After 1 week of no gluten, sugar or dairy, the pain just disappeared. Other symptoms have also decreased significantly. I have made no other lifestyle changes that would account for this. My only issue with the book is that it does seem (to me) to be aimed at an audience that does not eat significant veg and fruit already, so for someone on a quite healthy diet, the biggest leap will probably be what foods you need to remove completely rather than what you need to start eating. That said, it’s easy to understand (apart from the use of American cup measurements). I would recommend careful reading before leaping in as doing these diets incorrectly could, I suspect, have some negative impacts.”
