What would you do if your daughter, sister, wife, mother, loved one went missing? Would you leave it up to the police or would you try and help. This is the story of the missing and murdered women in Ireland in the 90’s. The author, Claire McGowan, was born in Newry, County Down, Ireland. During her time in Ireland, and, indeed, up to this day, Ireland is still separated into the North and South as it was during The Troubles.
Claire left Ireland, but she found a fascination in the numbers of missing and murdered women in Ireland. She feels that women are still second class citizens, and if you were white, with a prominent family your missing child had a better chance of being found or at least investigated. Class is still alive. As it is in this country, the USA, where color and poverty play a part in who is investigated. Class matters. Claire looks at eight cases that were never solved, and tells us their stories.
This is an invigorating book in that these missing women and their families come alive. We learn about the different names for police in the north and south. The names, dates, families and suspects are evident. The 1990’s were the times of The Troubles, and missing women were not always a high priority. If you have seen the 2022 film, ‘Belfast’ you will have a better idea of what I speak. Claire McGowan does not give up. She explores these stories, u til we want to know the truth as she does.
The author goes into the psyche of the killers and of those involved. It was partly the times, but it was also that those missing were women. Today there are many missing men and the search for them is as exhaustive as the rest. .We come to learn of the history of Ireland in the 90’s and before. The life of a typical Irish lass.
The organizational qualities of the Gardia is as importantvas their work.
We also learn of missing people all over the world who were found or set free. What was their plight, how did they re-enter society, and how are they doing today. However, the most important aspect of this story is the quest for a serial killer, was there one, many? Exquisite writing sets the stage, and then we are drawn into the stories. Not a tale to take lightly, and a particularly fascinating look into the lives of the missing, murdered and their families.

Bad Things don’t Usually Happen in Rural Ireland…

2 1/2 stars. I read a lot of true crime stories but I don’t like to waste my time reading shallow accounts which seem like the author has an axe to grind…
… and grind her axe she did!
The story starts off a little rudimentary but interesting enough telling of a suspected serial killer in Ireland in the 1990s…
… who takes young women and girls off the streets to the nearby fields of Wicklow where he rapes them while humming to country western music on his car radio…
Then…
He takes the victim up into the mountains, a notorious place to hide bodies in Ireland, and strangles them. Sometimes their body is never found…
Bad things don’t usually happen in rural Ireland… or do they?…
Then the story dissolves into laundry list after laundry list of shallow accounts of missing and presumed dead Irish females…
The author clearly draws her own conclusions and attempts to lead the reader into agreeing with her findings. This novel was an First Reads choice so nothing lost, nothing gained.

I saw a TV special a while back about Sophie, how she was found and what was thought. It’s the only one I have ever heard of. The rest are so sad. I have visited Ireland and found the people friendly and curious about us. I will go back, but I will be thinking about this book when I do.

This was a fascinating story .I had no idea how many women were missing in Ireland. We don’t think about serial killers being there or the way various institutions act regarding women. Ireland is a beautiful country with wonderful people. I have stayed at or visited many of the places mentioned and never felt unsafe.

Difficult to Absorb, Disconcerting to Learn

This analysis of real missing person cases and abduction and murder cases in Ireland was difficult to read. McGowan focuses on several cases, comparing and contrasting their similarities and differences. She shows how attitudes toward women and their value can have various effects on solving crimes. Bringing in the influence of religion and politics, McGowan explores possibilities and in the end explains that no one knows why and how so many people become missing. I found the topic to be scary and disconcerting. After reading the book I felt great frustration at the lack of answers despite decades of investigation. Comparing her novel writing to real life, McGowan shows how real life leaves us with questions that the novel answers. She leaves us with real life stories that have been solved, but their results were not enough to pacify my heart after reading all about the unsolved ones. I am upset. I may stay upset. That fact alone makes the book 4 instead of 5 stars, even though it’s not McGowan’s fault. It just is.
