The Authors
Peter Ginter is the lead author for this project (and the one who I have had the most contact with so far). Peter M. Ginter (Ph.D., University of North Texas; M.B.A., B.S., Auburn University) is a Professor in The Department of Health Care Organization and Policy and Director of the Preparedness and Emergency Response Learning Center. He is also a Senior Scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Ginter is active in research in strategic management, leadership, and health care organizations. He is the author or co-author of sixteen books including Strategic Management of Health Care Organizations, 7th edition. (2013), Public Health Leadership and Management (2002) and The Physician Strategist (1996). W. Jack Duncan is Professor of Management Emeritus & University Scholar Emeritus in the Graduate School of Management at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He also holds appointments as Professor of Health Care Organization & Policy in the School of Public Health and Professor of Health Services Administration in the School of Health Professions. Duncan is a Senior Scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy. He received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Linda Swayne joined the faculty of the Belk College of Business, UNC Charlotte in 1981 and is now Professor of Marketing. She has served as president of the Charlotte Chapter of the American Marketing Association, Southern Marketing Association and Southwestern Federation of Administrative Disciplines. Dr. Swayne has written eleven textbooks.

Book pages were stuck together

I ordered this book in advance and I’m about to use it for my class. First time opening the book today when I noticed there are chunks of pages that are stuck together. I have been trying to separate the pages gently without ripping the pages off.

Does not work in Kindle app

I bought the kindle version of this textbook, however, every time I try to open this textbook in the Kindle app, the app crashes. I have not been able to successfully open the textbook; and in speaking with other classmates of mine, they all experienced the same issue and had to purchase the book elsewhere.

I have used this book in its hard copy form for years, to prepare lectures and reference health services management concepts. I recently purchased the Kindle version, but unfortunately it crashes each time I select it in my Kindle app on Windows 10. The online store person informed me that it has been ported to every other platform but Windows 10. I am hoping the author rectifies this issue so I can read it on my PC.

Author, Peter M Ginter’s ‘The Stategic Management of Health Care Organisations’ is obviously aimed at those in management within the health services. Be it-in UK terms the NHS and Private sectors. However, for those who are based in the UK and working in the public sector, be aware, TSMOHCO is based on US health systems and therefore for those who might be employed in the medical rather than commercial side of a public system, will find much within not that useful.
However, there are certainly areas which overlap in each country and in each sector. For those coming at it from a student perspective and who wish to pursue a career in Health Management, there is much in Ginter’s work which will be of interest.

This book covers the core business strategy concepts that you would find in the majority of business strategy textbooks – Porter, strengths and weaknesses analysis, balanced scorecards, mission statements, etc., and discusses these applied to mainly U.S. medical companies and healthcare providers. This coverage is okay, but seems general and shallow. Having spent many years in my early career in NHS healthcare research and strategy, I felt the book offered very little to inform about challenges specific to managing and planning healthcare provision, such as regional health strategy planning, hospital bed usage, healthcare coordination, information strategy and security, and service delivery.

A book aimed at squarely at healthcare management professionals, this is a comprehensive and well delivered reference manual, albeit focused as it is primarily on US systems and markets which makes it of limited, immediate use in the UK. There are some areas where useful information and techniques can be gleaned though for the UK reader, particularly in areas of broad strategy and developing new systems to deliver health provision, and also of course if it is your aim to get your head around issues and systems relevant to US healthcare, this is a competent handbook to enable you to do just that.
