Biography

Dr. Carlat received his undergraduate education at University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated in 1983 cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree at University of California, San Francisco, and went on to complete a residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, from 1992-1995. He was chief resident of the MGH inpatient psychiatry unit in 1995.

After residency, Dr. Carlat began private practice in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and was founder and series editor of the Practical Guide Series in Psychiatry, published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. His textbook, The Psychiatric Interview, currently in its second edition, has been translated into four languages, and is the bestselling book in the Practical Guide series. It was selected as one of 17 top recommended psychiatric books on the Brandon/Hill Selected List of print media for small medical libraries.

Has creative examples on how to ask difficult questions to your patient, how to handle when the patient continues to put the ball in our court, and has endless tips. Small size makes it handy Just under 7″ x 4″
Personally, I like this book because it sympathizes with the patient’s feelings, thus leading you to ask questions in such a way that are unbiased, therefore, obtaining a more accurate response. The creativeness in their questions put patients at ease. Extremely helpful for me as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner student during clinicals.
This was mandatory on my list for graduate school, and I am glad. Worth buying!
I was going to post a picture of some of the neat examples, but not sure if I am allowed to do that.
BONUS! There is an example psychiatric evaluation form in the very back. It lists all the questions I need for my interview. Love it!!!

Love this book. Have been doing psychiatry for a few years and bought this a couple months ago when I started getting a lot of new patients and lots of psychopathology. I sometimes get bogged down in details with a patient during his or her intake and diagnostic picture tends to get even more cloudy. This little gem of a book has some excellent quick questions to cover during initial appointment (and suggestions how to ask in a nonoffensive but not leading way). Psych diagnosis is rarely black and white but this helped put everything back in a framework for interview without it being overly-structured and tortuous. Thank you

I’m a PMHNP student and absolutely love this book. It is such a great read and provides so many rationales for the things I already do in my practice. If you’re learning to interview patients and want something easy to read, get this book. Everything is clearly explained, even things you didn’t think about.

Best pocket book out their for the psychiatric assessment. Author shares a breadth of knowledge with a very encouraging tone. Perfect for the DNP/MD/PA student interested in mastering the field of mental health. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, this is a must-have! Kudos!

This book is required for a class, and I am glad that it is. It is very helpful in terms of techniques for the interview of psychiatric patients, but I think it would be useful in the interview of any patient. It is pocket sized and very specific and direct, and I made tabs for each section for quick reference. I would recommend this book to anyone who interviews patients.

This not only tells you how to ask; it tells you what to ask, and why, all in a warm, kindly, even humorous tone. Priceless for a beginner. I found it reassuring and a great boost to my confidence…Just give yourself time to memorize key points, or make yourself a brief cheat sheet from your notes..

It’s still worth buying because there is helpful info sprinkled throughout and there are great templates in the back of the book. But many chapters are very cursory and the info is disappointingly general.

I bought this book in kindle version in January 2018, but I didn’t have a chance to read it until now. I was very into it, following the interview questions. Then I realized that some of messages/ contents don’t match with the previous page and found that that there are many skipping pages. That’s not very useful to me if the book is not complete.
