Hi! I’m Ree Drummond, also known as The Pioneer Woman. After marrying a cattle rancher, moving to the country, and having babies for ten years, I started a blog on a whim in 2006. There, I shared stories from my childhood, photos of my children growing up in the country, and eventually, recipes I cooked for my family. This eventually led to my first cookbook, which was released in 2009, and two cookbooks since. I love writing about food (and taking photos of food!) both in my cookbooks and on my website. I also love eating the food I write about!

I have enjoyed writing a series of children’s picture books based on my very lethargic and malodorous Basset Hound named Charlie. “Charlie the Ranch Dog” has been a sweet experience for me.

My Food Network show, “The Pioneer Woman,” premiered in 2011 and it’s still being filmed on the Oklahoma ranch I share with my husband and four children.

Athena “I have all Ree’s cookbooks and found them fun and instructive (steps illustrated out) with regular pantry items. So far, I made three items in the book and they were spot on and delicious.
*The taquitos with pulled chicken and they were delicious.
*The coconut shrimp with mango dip (I baked instead of fried)
*the crunchy breakfast wrap (minus the tator tots) – scrambled eggs, sausage, and avocado in tortilla.
My favorite two chapters in the book are the SALADS and the SPEEDY SKILLETS because they have more of the food I prefer. These chapters reminded me of the best of the pioneer woman. Unfortunately, about 1/3 of the book I could do without.
Why could I do without them?
— Regarding the techniques – some techniques sound helpful for a larger family (for example the pancake recipe made in a sheet pan. I could see how this would be helpful to not be standing over a stove – the pancakes rose nicely and you can cut individual wedges for serving). While other techniques presented seem like they would be fast in a skillet rather than the way presented in the book. For example, there is a recipe for microwaving separate mugs with individual portions of scrambled egg instead of scrambling in a skillet. It just seems faster to cook on a skillet and add your toppings (i.e. Denver, cheese). A second example of this is wafflewiches. At the end of the day it is faster to put 2-5 grilled sandwiches on a skillet or in the oven than it is to cook them individually in a waffle pan that is actually more of a hassle to clean than a skillet.
–Some recipes are a mash up of traditional breakfast items and to me would be more appealing in their original form. For example, in the book there is a recipe for bagels cut in half on a sheet pan, eggs are cracked in the bagel hole, the sheet pan is baked in the oven until eggs are set. Once fully cooked the sheet pan is drizzled with hollandaise, and topped with capers, chopped red onion, and smoked salmon pieces. With smoked salmon in NE United States running $24 a pound I just don’t think I’d treat the ingredient like this.
–I didn’t expect health food here – I also didn’t expect the book to have recipe for something that didn’t need a recipe and that was so blatantly unhealthy. For example adding white chocolate chips to pancakes, drizzling the pancakes with white chocolate syrup and adding whipped cream.
–Some ingredient were just items I don’t prefer (tator tots). I am also trying to be sensitive to recipes as I try to lower carbohydrate intake and many of the recipes didn’t appeal to me (“tator tots,” fried pasta chips (bow tie pasta deep fried), baked wings with habanero honey, pepperoni fried rice,
—Some repetitions just puzzling (two brie appetizer , 2 tator tot, 3 pizza) recipes
I am listing some of the chapters because I would have appreciated reading this before I ordered the book online.

Linda “you’ll have the best time reading, using and eating from this glorious COOKBOOK

Ree Drummond is no stranger to the kitchen or making cookbooks. Recent changes to family life brought about by COVID-19 quarantines caused her to reevaluate her approach to kitchen time and cooking. Shortcuts could be ok if the food doesn’t suffer and they result in more time spent with family.

Drummond provides pictures of her favorite “shortcut” items; canned and frozen products that are GOOD and can save lots of time when preparing recipes. She also suggests some hacks to save time, like using rotisserie chickens from the store when you need shredded chicken; all cooked & seasoned, ready to shred. There are others and seeing actual pictures of the products Ree uses will save lots of times for some folks.

Her time saving suggestions carry over to the recipes themselves. Not nearly so many bowls and vessels are used and more tho’t is given to single pot, casserole dish, bowls and the like and how that will impact cleanup and total time spent.

By far, my favorite part of this cookbook, (aside from the food), is the sheer number of pictures. Every recipe has a pictorial guide of the various steps and a finished product. You can read the recipe, follow the steps, check the pictures and know if you’re doing all right along the way rather than ending up unhappy at the end of the cooking process.

If you’re an health officionado, this book might rankle a bit. There aren’t any DV’s for anything. This is down home on the ranch cooking, comfort food, casseroles, full flavor, butter bearing, whipped cream topped, eewey, gooey and delicious eating.

Besides being full of great culinary photography, Ree has included updates on all her family members and used them throughout the book as assistants and provides pictures that tell their individual stories. It’s like you get a family album inside the cookbook. Fans will be in Pioneer Woman heaven.

Without a doubt, this cookbook can be used by beginner and seasoned cooks alike and will make a terrific gift for the holiday season or any reason”
