The gripping inside story of the British royal family’s battle to overcome the dramas of the Diana years—only to confront new, twenty-first-century crises The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor–the Truth and the Turmoil.

“Never again” became Queen Elizabeth II’s mantra shortly after Princess Diana’s tragic death. More specifically, there could never be “another Diana”—a member of the family whose global popularity upstaged, outshone, and posed an existential threat to the British monarchy.

Picking up where Tina Brown’s masterful The Diana Chronicles left off, The Palace Papers reveals how the royal family reinvented itself after the traumatic years when Diana’s blazing celebrity ripped through the House of Windsor like a comet.

Brown takes readers on a tour de force journey through the scandals, love affairs, power plays, and betrayals that have buffeted the monarchy over the last twenty-five years. We see the Queen’s stoic resolve after the passing of Princess Margaret, the Queen Mother, and Prince Philip, her partner for seven decades, and how she triumphs in her Jubilee years even as family troubles rage around her. Brown explores Prince Charles’s determination to make Camilla Parker Bowles his wife, the tension between William and Harry on “different paths,” the ascendance of Kate Middleton, the downfall of Prince Andrew, and Harry and Meghan’s stunning decision to step back as senior royals. Despite the fragile monarchy’s best efforts, “never again” seems fast approaching.

Tina Brown has been observing and chronicling the British monarchy for three decades, and her sweeping account is full of powerful revelations, newly reported details, and searing insight gleaned from remarkable access to royal insiders. Stylish, witty, and erudite, The Palace Papers will irrevocably change how the world perceives and understands the royal family.

Praise for The Diana Chronicles

“[Tina Brown] knows this world much better than many who inhabit it.”The New York Times

“By turns salacious, vinegary, depressing and hilarious . . . a psychodrama, a morality play, a pageant of recklessness and revenge, of passion and pity, of loneliness and looniness.”The Wall Street Journal

The Diana Chronicles . . . has enough of Diana’s hairpin personality turns, emotional drops, and gleeful summits to be a Disneyland thrill ride.”Los Angeles Times

“Brown’s jam-packed, juicy roll in the high cotton is . . . a walloping good read.”TheWashington Post

“[An] insanely readable and improbably profound new biography.”Chicago Tribune

I’m not sure how I discovered Duchess Goldblatt, but I am most certainly glad I did. She is absolutely delightful on Twitter, and if she had just presented a book of tweets I probably would’ve been perfectly happy. You don’t have to follow Duchess Goldblatt on Twitter to enjoy this book, but if you don’t follow her you really don’t know what you’re missing.

We have been given a book that is truly a gift. This is a story of a woman who is struggling as many women do. This is a sweet and bittersweet book that had me tears up often. Even though I often had tears in my eyes this book is a delight. I’m sure I laughed more often than I cried. The fact that she is a huge of Lyle Lovett does not hurt. Honestly every time he’s mentioned it gave me a spark of joy in my very soul. I stretched out this book as long as I possibly could because I just didn’t want to have to put it down. I solved this problem in part by getting the audiobook so that I could listen to Lyle Lovett read his portion of the conversation.

I think I would dearly love to meet Anonymous one day so she could give me a big hug and call me honey bunch. I would even settle for rascal.

This book is magic and poetry. Duchess Goldblatt’s small poetical tweets are perfect for weary souls. The author, Anonymous, struggles with cumulative losses and heartbreaks in her life and feels as though she has nothing to offer friends or anyone else after an unexpected and crushing divorce. She creates Duchess Goldblatt, in part to perhaps reconnect with humans safely and anonymously, or—for those of us who fiercely love words and literature—to have a safe place to say things we otherwise might not. Words have power, both to crush and to heal. This memoir is a joy to read, and reminds any of us who have experienced loss of any kind that we are not really alone. We just need to look for our tribe. Keep an eye out for ruffs, that’s usually the first clue we are DG’s faithful followers. Thank you, your grace.
