Reviews From Customers

A lot of the information is on the blog

I love Emily Henderson and have been following her for years. I LOVED her first book. In my opinion, THAT book will take your home to the next level…more so than this one. If you are designing your first house, this book is for you. It gives you “the rules” that most people follow when designing and names the parts of a window, etc. There are beautiful pictures in the book…lots of eye candy, BUT if you’ve been following her for a while, you’ve seen most of these photos.

Too basic

I was a big fan of Emily Henderson’s first book. It’s still really useful in styling/arranging my home. But this new book is a big disappointment. It seems written for people who have never owned a home or even rented an apartment before. The text is beyond basic — there’s a picture of an animal hide rug and a paragraph explaining that it’s an “animal hide.” Duh. The first half of the book is like this! Do we really need yet another book explaining flat, matte, semigloss, etc., paint varieties? Or that explains flooring options in such a rudimentary way — “carpet, stone, concrete, brick” — as if those were foreign terms that needed a picture for us to understand them. (“Gee, that’s what carpeting is?”) Or that tell us that a chaise longue means “long chair”? This is why Google was invented!
Where the book is much better is in the terrific photography and in the instances when Emily’s advice is detailed about concepts that aren’t obvious — like explaining the terms for each of the parts of kitchen cabinetry.
I will flip through this book to get ideas from the photos but that’s about it. It’s far too basic but I’m sure will be useful for someone who has never had their own place before.

Beautiful pics but pretty basic

I love Emily’s blog because of her design esthetic but especially because she explains HOW to make design decisions to get the look that you want. For example on one post she explains that the number of lights in a window will make it it feel more modern (fewer lights) or more traditional (more lights). In another she explains how to determine the best scale for furniture for a room. I hoped the wallpaper section would explain how the print scale impacts a room and what size works for bigger or smaller rooms. This is the type of advice I thought would be in the book. Instead most of the book has pages of definitions of basic things like cooktop vs ranges vs wall ovens, paint sheens and bathtub sizes. Not too much to help guide renovation decisions from an athletic perspective. I will probably keep the book because the rooms are beautifully designed, but disappointed because it’s more of a coffee table/picture book than a book to learn from.

Not the renovation bible I expected

Like other reviewers I found this book strangely basic or shallow with 2/3 of it devoted to naming types of decor and design options- types of sinks, counter materials, types of blinds, etc. The market is full of this info. The last third does have some helpful tips on renovation, a few lists of standard placement and spacing for various rooms, but from the way Emily had talked about writing the book she needed during gut renovations of 2 huge project houses, I really thought there would be more of the nitty gritty deep dive into renovating and planning a home well. It’s beautiful but sadly not very useful to me.

Super useful guide, with beautiful photos (and Emily’s lovely personality all over)

I just bought my first house and this book is going to be so useful! Just hours after I’ve received it, I checked it to see the difference between roman shades and roman rollers. I know I’ll be going back to it over and over again, not only for the information and tips, but also the inspirational photos. Emily and her team found the more beautiful places to shoot, different than all the places we see everywhere in the internet, all looking the same. I I’ve been following Emily on her blog and social media for many years, and I am so happy to now own this great guide. Already ordered one for my friend!

Perfect for beginners!!

I read Emily’s blog regularly and still found this book super helpful. I think it is mainly geared towards beginners, either beginning an interest in interior design or beginning to design a room or home. I just moved into a new home and loved thinking through all the possibilities with the help of this book. It is NOT about tweaking what you already have/furnitures/soft goods/decorating. Instead, it is a book about proportions, layouts, and options, with lots of beautiful pictures that illustrate principles. The tone of the book is approachable and friendly, rather than aspirational or showcasing someone’s portfolio. My one criticism is that I sometimes wish Emily’s opinion was a bit clearer, rather than laying out all the options so evenly. I think that was intentional, as Emily often explains a ‘rule’ but then carefully backtracks the rule to explain that individuality and preference should rule the day. She is not designing your house, you are designing your house and she is there to cheer you on. This will be my go-to housewarming present for the interior design lovers in my life. I’ve already purchased 2 additional copies.

An incredible resource and fun to read
May 19, 2022

This book is an incredibly rich and detailed resource but also – importantly – and kind of unexpectedly – fun to read. I am embarking on a home renovation this year and so grateful to have this book by my side; after a few days of reading I already feel much better equipped to take on my project.

As some other reviewers have noted, yes, some of the information is available on the internet already – but it’s not available (a) all in one place, like this; and (b) incredibly well researched and well vetted, meaning that the information is reliable. You can’t trust everything you read on the internet, but I can definitely trust everything in this book. I feel like the book has already paid for itself tenfold in terms of helping me avoid inevitable mistakes.

Best of all, and more importantly to me, it’s an entertaining read – even if you’re not undertaking a renovation anytime soon, the photography and text have some great and inspiring ideas. I’m grateful I took a chance on this book after reading the reviews. Will definitely be gifting it to my design-y friends too.
