WARNING: Do not follow the dose recommendations in this book without checking with a healthcare provider first. On page 48 in the discussion on folic acid dosing I found typographical errors substituting the abbreviation for milligrams (mg) for what should be the abbreviation for micrograms (the Greek letter mu followed by g). Following the book’s recommendation to start folic acid with “800 mg” would result in a dose that is 1000 times too high. 1000 micrograms = 1 milligram. There is one report in the medical literature of fatal folic acid overdose; I was not able to get the full article so I could not learn the dose taken. However, the tolerable upper limit for folate is 1000 micrograms (1 milligram) per day, so the recommendation on page 48 to start with “800 mg” is 800 times above the recommended upper limit, in addition to being 1000 times too high. When used appropriately in correct doses, folic acid can help prevent birth defects, but if misused it can cause harm. Reader beware.

I owned the original paperback which I had all these years as it did work for me, and I upgraded to the newer version (this version). There is a lot of good in this book, but I feel that now some of the new added parts are behind the times. Canola oil is recommended without telling the negatives, and no mention of Macadamia Nut Oil (better for cooking). For fiber, no mention of Larch Tree Arabinogalactan. Diet Soda is recommended when it should never be based on many factors we now know on health and also effect on wanting more sweets. Still too much sugar is used. Here is a tip to solve that and still use the book – TRUVIA sugar substitute. They also make Truvia Brown Sugar Blend which is about $6. Use this instead of pure brown sugar – it was and tastes great! And finally how Statins (when no heart attack has occured) are just accepted did not sit well with me and I think that is what bothers me. That alone can take up pages of discussion. I don’t want to be mean to him, as his original book did help me, but this book is somewhat flawed. Even some recipes could easily be modified to be much more healthy as I said with Truvia. Use Truvia and Egg substitute and all is much better. Replacing a Statin with a natural statin or niacin still effects your liver and needs to be monitored, so there is no escaping it. You can only do so much with diet but it is still important considering the garbage people eat today. However there are still things like exercise and supplements beneficial for the heart. This book has value and should be read, but you have to start with not eating junk and exercise. It is a good book but not the end all.

Results have been nothing short of phenomenal.

This book has changed my life, to put it mildly. I’ve been following it for almost four months now. I’m 53 and have not felt this healthy in 20 years. I weigh less than I did 20 years ago. I feel almost like a kid again. Even my eyesight has improved and I rarely have to wear my distance glasses anymore.

But it was my heart that I was worried about four months ago. Shortly after starting the niacin and other supplements, I could actually feel a difference in my heart and blood chemistry. It is my belief that if there is such a thing as a miracle supplement, it’s niacin. Even my mental acuity has increased.

Today I got the results of my most recent blood test. When I went in to the doctor’s office, the nurse practitioner looked at my results and asked me for a list of the medications I’m taking. I answered “nothing, not a single medication”. She clearly didn’t believe me, so I told her again, and she just looked kind of shocked and said “Well, that’s a good thing!”.

All the heart doctor told me was that he would like me to take some fish oil to “improve my LDL pattern”. Guess he was having trouble finding anything to advise me on. LOL. This was a far cry from my visit four months ago when he put heavy pressure on me to start using statins, et al. I’m grateful that I found this book instead.

Here are my before and after blood test results:

Total cholesterol: dropped from 252 to 196.
LDL (bad) cholesterol: dropped from 164 to 100
HDL (good) cholesterol: rose from 51 to 60
Triglycerides: dropped from 185 to 96
Blood pressure: dropped from 136/94 to 122/74

I’m thrilled. My wife is thrilled. I exercise more, I eat better, and I don’t even have bad niacin flushes anymore. Kowalski was a genius.

I just found out my cholesterol is high, and so are trigs and LDL. My HDL is 43, should be 45 at least. I read some things in there that will help. First, the NIACIN. I went off my multivitamins because I wanted to try without them, as the good ones I take weren’t available. I again found them and am back on them now. Niacin was one of the ingredients. 258 cholesterol 255 trigs. I’m getting some Garcinia Cambogia which is supposed to help lower cholesterol and lose weight. My Dr thinks my thyroid could be a problem. I’m also menopausal. I’m calling my Dr for an appointment and taking my lab results with me. Best penny I ever spent! It is an older book, and I can’t take statins or cholesterol reducing drugs because of past muscle and joint pain/damage. I can’t do osteoporosis drugs for that same reason. I have tripped and fallen with very little or no damage. Never broke a bone in my body my whole life, and my bones are not that large(except hips) but very strong. I’m reading and absorbing 1 or 2 chapters a night.

This book contains a wealth of information about cholesterol in an easy to understand format. It is up to date and gives sensible advice(mostly) about how to deal with high cholesterol. I find myself using it as a reference book as it has different approaches to be used in tandem that give the views of someone who has suffered from and beat the problem, such as diet, exercise and supplements.The author is obviously knowledgeable about the subject and the style is informal and easy to access even though the info is sometimes pretty complex. One thing I didn’t like was his advice on diet as it seems far too radical- a very low calorie count is advised for those who need to lose weight and certain food groups are limited . I also thought that many of the recipes were too sweet and geared to American palates. However, overall the book has been useful to me in my struggle with high cholesterol.

This book is encouraging, not a doom and gloom manual, written by an author who has considered all the factors that lead to premature death in adults. It gives sensible advice that is easy to follow. Go buy and enjoy a longer life.

very interesting book good information. i tried the muffins recipe but through them away i think the the recipe gave the wrong measurements for the ingredients /ie a tbsp of baking powder and the grams of the egg substitute .
