Joe M.
Genius Chord book a must for Guitar
May 27, 2022

Tim is an absolute talent. The wealth of knowledge that is in the book is what I’ve been searching for, prior to; I knew that my chord vocabulary was becoming stagnant, and I needed to find something challenging and rewarding. I follow him on YouTube, and around that time it’s like the Universe responded, because Tim released a vid about this book. I waited a bit to buy from its release date because of work, but now that summer is approaching, and I’ll have more time to learn new techniques on guitar, this book will benefit greatly.

Great resource for solo jazz guitar (chord melody) or comping
May 31, 2022

If you need to work on expanding your harmonic vocabulary on guitar, or if maybe you want a quick reference to find chords to fit your solo guitar arrangements, this book is a great starting point. I would recommend it to advanced-beginner-to-intermediate players. The contents are clear, but I would recommend a prior understanding of chord progressions, cadences, basic arrangement, and voice leading principles.

Of course, anyone with a good ear or a knack for making great music could just pick this up and start using some really cool chords, but it’s probably not the best option if you’re just getting started.

Tim is an amazing player and human being. If you’ve never heard him play, go to YouTube right now, then come back and buy this book! You’ll thank me later.

Hey guitar players…buy this one!

Really enjoying this book! As someone who has been studying with Tim Lerch’s courses on TrueFire for a while, I can say this book is well worth buying to keep learning more about his approach to chord melody.

Well laid out
June 5, 2022

I enjoy learning with Tim . Along with The video master class , it’s a great immersive approach.
I’ve taken each chord diagram I’m working on and written it out myself on separate notebook . Somehow this extra step helps lock in the chord intervals on the strings when practicing without the book, or notepad

He’s sharing a deep conversation with his love of music and compliments Ted Greene’s teaching legacy and other jazz greats with grace .

One of the best books I’ve ever purchased!

I am not an accomplished musician. This book has enabled me to create colorful chord melodies. All the voicings laid out in such a logical way, searching for them is a snap.

Cant wait to dig deeper.

If you are writing solo arrangements this book is great.
May 23, 2022

I’ve just had this book for a couple of weeks but have learned a lot ina short time. Usually I play a lot of tabbed transcriptions but it is hard to learn concepts from those that you can apply to your own arrangements. I’m so grateful Tim Lerch wrote this book.

Tim’s book on chord voicings and accompanying master classes offer a solid approach to unwinding the mystery of leading tones and chord changes

Fabulous… clear ‘keys’ to unlock melodic jazz – makes me fall in love with guitar all over again!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2022

I’m an intermediate player who has found frustration / slow going to be a real barrier to my progress… stop / start and long periods of not feeling like I’m getting very far… UNTIL NOW!

Tim provides a simple and clear key to unlocking the mysteries of chords / melody in a way that hadn’t been clear to me until I read the opening introduction…

There is a fantastically freeing sense of becoming ‘in charge’ of chords / and the relationship to melody instead of feeling like I was constantly a ‘dunce’ in not knowing every inversion / way forward… this through Tim’s clear, generous authorship… and proven capability….

He is a great practitioner / teacher and his generous spirit shared through YouTube is present in every page… If like me, you’ve been feeling a little thwarted and overwhelmed by creating arrangements, then this straightforward and pragmatic guide is an absolute God-send!

Highly recommended, and takes precedence over all other guides in my humble opinion!

A must have chord book that takes a novel, and necessary, approach to chord shapes
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 18, 2022

Most people will wonder why they’d need another chord book. Firstly everyone would benefit from this…it’s a really useful tool, even if you’re familiar with these voicings (you won’t be, there’s tons) as it allows you to cleverly find the correct voicing for the desired melody (top) note….that’s good for any genre of music, for anything ‘chord melody’ focused, jazz etc it’s an absolute must. Money well spent and it’s encouraging me to think about this approach to guitar and thus helping in my development. For what it’s worth, this is best suited to intermediates and not beginners BUT don’t be fooled into thinking it’s only for the Joe Pass’ of this world…..any intermediate will benefit from it. Congrats Tim, you smashed it.

A No Brainer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 9, 2022

If you have any interest in solo jazz guitar at all then the kindle version is a no Brainer as the price point is very good. There is a lot of bonus material (some great stuff for those getting started with this style of playing) and lots of interesting things in the book (such as several arrangements which Tim plays in the bonus section).
I will also purchase the physical book once it becomes available on co uk as I prefer physical books to ebooks.
I’ve been a student of Tim’s for a while taking both private lessons and Truefire courses and can vouch that he knows what he’s talking about. Buy this book, get stuck in and enjoy the journey.

Not what I expected…
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 26, 2022

The title is “Melodic Jazz Guitar Chord Dictionary” but in fact it is just a collection of chords in the old fashioned style of the Leeds Chord Dictionary and I was expecting some collections of melodic jazz chord progressions that I could adapt for tunes I commonly perform but in fact it is just a rehash of many other books that show the number of possibilities for any chord on the fretboard. It would be better to describe it as a “Jazz Chord Dictionary” the term “Melodic” implies some joining up of chords to create melodic phrases. Ted Green’s “Chord Chemistry” and Ron Eschete’s “Intros & Outros” are much better in terms of application to a gigging musician.
