Lyrical prose, complex compelling relationships, well researched and integrated history – that’s just a snap shot of “The Last Rose of Shanghai”.

Told from alternating POV’s and dual timelines, Aiyi and Ernest’s story unfolds over 92 chapters. Author, Weina Dai Randel, is an extraordinary storyteller, weaving history and humanity together about an unique part of Shanghai’s past I had never heard before. Randel uses tension magnificently: between the socioeconomic classes, the men in Aiyi’s life, the volatile political situation and more. Her writing is perfect for the short chapter format, punctuating it with flair.

Relationships are the hallmark of this story. All the other elements are wonderful in supporting and filling out but the relationships ARE the story. Randel takes her time; they are intimate and layered with dialogue that moves the story along. Unfortunately, Randel also uses a full compliment of expletives. It’s not gratuitous, by any means, but the occurrences are far beyond literary accent. She is a much better writer and needs to take the high road, IMO.

An engrossing story set in China during World War II

The Last Rose of Shanghai caught my attention because of the setting. It seems that so many World War II novels are set in Axis or other Allied countries. Japanese occupied China, while an ally, never seems to receive as much attention.

This novel not only emphasizes the cultural atmosphere of Shanghai, it also makes it come alive with interesting characters. The traditions and expectations of the cultures are both detailed and well researched. Everything rings true and the characterizations are excellent.

The story centers around two individuals, Aiyi Shao and Ernest Reismann, and is very well written. It starts with an flashback retelling and goes into alternating chapters told from each of their viewpoints. The reader gets to appreciate the struggle from both sides.

This is a personal story, not focusing on the war itself, but only on the effects that it had on people’s lives. It is engrossing human drama and has a very satisfying ending. I do recommend it to anyone who is interested in a well developed and well written historical novel in this setting and time period.

Excellent WWII Historical Fiction Shines Light on Oft-Forgotten Arena of War

This book embodies the best of historical fiction, bringing an important “side story” to life (one overlooked by other novelists and even historians) and showing it through the eyes of realistic and believable “regular” people caught in the crossfire of bigger events that can’t help but affect them. While I’ve read or listened to a fair amount of WWI and WWII novels, I’ve never seen one focused on Japanese-occupied China during WWII. At its core, this is a love story of two unlikely people, a Chinese heiress and a German Jew refugee in Shanghai. As the occupation and the war weave into the fabric of daily life in China, we see how they affect this couple… as well as the prejudice they face on several fronts. The author made the characters and place feel so real. The couple and other characters are so richly drawn that the story immediately pulled me into its world and couldn’t help but want things to work out… despite all the forces tearing public and private worlds apart. The descriptions of place and people use all the senses, making for a rich, immersive read that puts you there. As a lifelong musician, I also loved how music wove in and out of the story, with the jazz nightclub owner heroine and the piano-playing hero. The focus on the arts adds a level of allegory to this already gripping read. This story touches on so many universal themes: love, personal tragedy, national tragedy, prejudice, making the best choices in hard circumstances… and ultimately hope and redemption. Highly recommended!

A story of war-torn Shanghai

What a terrific historical novel.

Shanghai under Japanese occupation. Aiyi, a young Chinese heiress hemmed in by tradition who sells her jewelry to start a jazz club to make back the fortune confiscated by the occupying government. Ernest, the Jewish refugee and piano virtuoso from Berlin who plays that jazz to the delight of Aiyi’s Chinese customers and to the disapproval of her family and fiancée who hold her future in their hands. “The Last Rose of Shanghai” teems with conflict.

And it is so well written. Author Weina Dai Randel plunges us into the middle of Shanghai, evoking its sights, sounds, and aromas, both the good and the bad. Her descriptions of jazz are so vivd you can almost hear the music. And her characters are so well drawn, so very human.

If you like historical fiction, especially fiction about China during WWII, this is a great selection.

Just not worth it

I really wanted to like this book, but it’s just one depressing thing after another. It had the potential to be amazing, but it’s hard to like any of the characters or even care about them at all. They’re either weak, deplorable, shallow, or unimaginative.

I gave it 3 stars because grammar and syntax are very well done while the story really needs work. So many digital books show no signs of being proofed, but this was not one of those.

I’ve been an avid reader of Asian historical novels for years and this is one of the best I’ve ever read. The idea if an interracial couple (from different backgrounds & social standing) falling in love would never have occurred to me. The characters were easily brought to life and the descriptions of life (& the struggles) during the war years were vividly brought to life during reading. The ending of the book was a complete surprise that I didn’t see coming. I finished this story in less than 2 days! And, as in any great book, I had a feeling of sadness when I realized that I reached the end. Big thanks to the author for writing such a great book!!!
