Attributes of The Landscape Painter’s Workbook PDF

The Landscape Painter’s Workbook is the definitive hands-on guide to the time-honored techniques and essential elements of landscape painting. The Landscape Painter’s Workbook PDF

Written by celebrated landscape artist, instructor, and author Mitchell Albala, this richly informative and beautifully illustrated volume leads you step by step through his approach to the genre, from establishing a composition using basic shapes to applying time-tested color strategies, with all-new lessons, practical exercises, and special topics, including:
The Complete Color Strategy. What are the three aspects of color contrast that guide a painting’s strategy?
Notan. Explore this special type of compositional study, which identifies the underlying shapes and patterns of a composition.
Picture Formats. How does the picture format—horizontal, vertical, or square—affect the composition? What are the pros and cons of each?
Color Grouping. A full chapter details this special practice, which helps maintain harmony by organizing colors into a limited number of groups.
Composition. An in-depth review of variation, movement, and active negative space, with illustrations that diagram the action in each example.
Workshop Exercises. Instead of demonstrations that show how the author paints, The Landscape Painter’s Workbook includes 10 skill-building workshop exercises to help you work through essential lessons on your own.
With examples of work by 45 contemporary landscape painters—more than 80 paintings in all—in oil, acrylic, pastel, and watercolor, the lessons are suitable for all mediums. Each painting is thoroughly analyzed in terms of shape, composition, or color, with supporting diagrams, thumbnails, and photographs.

The Landscape Painter’s Workbook inspires and informs all artists, from aspiring to accomplished, on how to successfully portray the majesty and subtlety of the natural world.

The For Artists series expertly guides and instructs artists at all skill levels who want to develop their classical drawing and painting skills and create realistic and representational art.

A Practical Hands-on Guide to Better Landscapes
January 30, 2022

There are dozens of books about landscape painting . As a longtime teacher and practitioner of this art, I own nearly all of them. Most are so similar in approach and content that buying one would be sufficient for most of us. To broaden the market, such books all tend to assume that readers know little about the subject and therefore attempt to cover everything from choosing brushes and color to creating finished masterpieces. Mitchell Albala’s first book, Landscape Painting: Essential Concepts and Techniques for Plain Air and Studio Practice, now a classic of the genre, covers this same terrain, but also provides excellent, detailed guidance on as composition, simplifying nature, abstracting the landscape, and working with light and color.
Albala’s recent book, The Landscape Painter’s Workbook: Essential Studies in Shape, Composition, and Color, provides practical instruction for applying these fundamental topics to one’s own work, through concise discussions, abundant illustrations, and excellent hands-on exercises. In other words, this is a true workbook.
Beginning students could advance rapidly simply by applying themselves to the exercises. Experienced artists such as myself can draw upon Albala’s presentation and exercises to sharpen and refine our own presentation in classes and workshops. But it is serious intermediate artists, who already know but have not mastered the basics, who can benefit most from this workbook. It addresses their most troubling artistic problems and provides a way out of the confusion and frustration that plagues the struggling painter.
Beyond that, Albala’s new book encourages and inspires all readers to step our of our comfort zones and try strategies in composition, value, and color that perhaps could lead our work in new, inspired directions.

Wow! Tons of information with examples
January 25, 2022

Just got this today, and couldn’t wait to dive into this book. Beautiful paintings from a variety of artists accompany Albala’s discussion of composition, simplifying shapes, value, horizontal vs vertical format choice, movement pathways, color strategy, and limited vs split vs targeted palettes.

Review questions accompany sections to help you analyze and improve your painting.

Exercises Include using notan, same so bject in different formats, simplifying/differentiating with limited values, mapping movement pathways, color and value priority, color groupings, and creating neutrals.

This is a great reference for artists, particularly those interested in painting landscapes in oils and/or acrylics

What you won’t find: discussion of materials (brushes, recommended colors, mediums, supports) and specific techniques (washes, glazes, preparing or toning canvases/panels) This is not a “how to” book aimed at getting beginners to slap paint on their first canvas. Instead this book is a terrific resource for all thoughtful intermediate to advanced artists seeking to improve the impact of their landscapes.

Excellent, rich content and gorgeous examples

I have Albala’s first book and wasn’t sure whether I should purchase his second book. Wow, I’m so glad I did. This new book contains very well organized thematic chapters with practical exercises so you can learn by doing. I learned more from the chapters about color (e.g., Color Strategies and Color Grouping) than I have learned in other books and workshops devoted solely to that topic.

Buy it! you’ll be glad you did!

NOTE: One reviewer complained that the Kindle version was all grayscale images! Not true! The Kindle version contains every word of the print edition, and is indeed in beautiful living color. Mostly likely, there was a problem with that reviewer’s file, or an incorrect setting on her end.

No color images on Kindle

I like the author of this book and own his earlier one. I am new to Kindle. I had no idea that it was grayscale only. I will buy books from now on that have color plates. Very disappointed.

Clear and concise, like an expensive art workshop in book form
January 31, 2022

The author’s art teaching experience shines through in his new book. Landscape painting is a vast and overwhelming genre; this workbook provides painters (using any medium) a path to move forward and create better paintings. Albala efficiently explains concepts many artists can’t articulate or find difficult to grasp. He employs many examples and exercises to cover essential picture-making principles. Review questions in each section reiterate the lesson and enable you to analyze and critique your own work. That’s huge! Ultimately the book can help painters of all levels become better and more confident artists.

Perhaps one of the best books for landscape painters I have read.

The author has clearly done his homework and the examples by talented artists illustrate the concerns of painting in an informed and thoughtful manner. If you are “landscape-curious” or a seasoned pro, this book will be a great resource for your own creativity.

A Problem-Solver’s Delight
February 8, 2022

Mitch introduces his new book to painters as a handbook for problem-solving…those ‘problems’ being about shape, value, composition, color, and all the other tools artists create with. This book has examples and simple exercises to help each of us tease out answers, that is, solutions. Mitch’s encouraging coaching gives clear advice on his reasoning. I enthusiastically recommend diving in!

Should Be Required Reading

I have a sizable library of art books that cover collected works and functional instruction. This book covers both those categories. I’ve never come across an art book that offered such concise information, easy to digest, with well selected beautiful examples, and clear instructions. Well done. This will stay in my collection and revisited often.

Invaluable for all landscape artists.

This took a long time coming on pre-order but the wait was more than worth it.

The book itself is beautiful with many lovely examples that illustrate the teaching perfectly. Some have suggested that it would be more suited to intermediate or advanced painters. I would beg to differ and having now read the book completely feel that it would not only help form a solid foundational framework of ideas and concepts for beginners but would also be helpful to all landscape artists whether working in wet or dry media. Even much of the colour related teaching could be translated to other media such as pastels and coloured pencils. As the author indicates from the outset this book is intended to have a much broader focus than his first one on oil painting (which I haven’t read).

There were a lot of “aha” moments for me reading this book but I agree with the author that greatest progress will come through making the time and effort to complete the exercises (which are more enjoyable than onerous). I would also add that while some may not like the non- glossy pages for those who prefer to make notes and marks on the pages of their book, the paper used is perfect for that. I suppose it is a workbook after all.

This will undoubtedly be a well thumbed reference book for years to come.

Not sure about this book.
Reviewed in Canada on February 6, 2022

This book has a lot of information in it presented in a slightly different way from the norm. If you have been painting for a while you will be aware of most of the points made. The illustrations in the book seem mostly to be oil paintings with a few pastel and watercolors included. For a watercolorist this is sometimes to the detriment of the book as it can be difficult to translate the oil paintings into watercolors as the techniques are so different.
All in all I am slightly disappointed in the book.
