Kathy Iandoli is a critically acclaimed journalist and the author of God Save the Queens: The Essential History of Women in Hip-Hop and Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah. Kathy has coauthored The Queen Bee by Lil’ Kim and Commissary Kitchen by Albert “Prodigy” Johnson. She has written for Vibe, The Source, XXL, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Billboard, Pitchfork, Playboy, Cosmopolitan, Maxim, The Guardian, and Vice and held editorial positions at AllHipHop, HipHopDX, and BET online. Iandoli is an alumna-in-residence of music business at New York University and has appeared on television, radio, and panels discussing hip-hop and gender.

Monica Ahanonu is a freelance illustrator working and living in Los Angeles. After graduating from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, Monica started her career at DreamWorks Animation. She has worked with Netflix, Google, Instagram, The New York Times, Samsung, Time, InStyle, Adidas, Sprite, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sephora, Red Table Talk, and Vanity Fair and been featured online in Vogue, BuzzFeed, New York, Women’s Wear Daily, Architectural Digest, Bustle, Afropunk, and Design Milk. Her work has also been showcased at the Art Basel festival.

I’ve been enamored by female rappers for as long as I can remember so I feel like the God’s spoke and then…THIS was created. Between the narration in the guidebook by Kathy Iandoli and the illustrations by Monica Ahanonu, everything is so well put together! In order to appeal to different generations, the selection of women is pretty spot on- PERFECT mix of the old school & the new school. Kudos for including some of the more overlooked MC’s who don’t get the credit they deserve (Nikki D, Gangsta Boo, Jean Grae). The words chosen to represent each lady couldn’t be more fitting.

“IF” I had my way, I’d personally eliminate a few of the newer R&B divas and throw in a few more old school MC’s (Sweet Tee, Antoinette, Ms. Melodie) & early 00’s one-hit wonders (Amil, Ms. Jade, Charli Baltimore) but honestly, I couldn’t be more satisfied with what’s sitting in front of me.

Definitely worth the $20! Not only could this be used as a fun intuitive exercise but also as an educational piece for people who may not be up to speed on some of the baddest ladies who’ve paved the way! Thanks so much for creating this!

The only thing I would say is how disappointed I was Sa-Roc wasn’t included in the deck, I’m sure there are other hip hop queens who didn’t make it in either but for me that was the most notable.

The cards and box came in good condition. The pictures appear exactly how it looks on the computer screens. The cards are slightly large and It was worth the price. 🙂
