Attributes of The Happiness Hypothesis PDF

Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the reader with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation. In a stunning final chapter, Haidt addresses the grand question “How can I live a meaningful life?,” offering an original answer that draws on the rich inspiration of both philosophy and science. The Happiness Hypothesis PDF

“The Happiness Hypothesis is a wonderful and nuanced book that provides deep insight into the some of the most important questions in life–Why are we here? What kind of life should we lead? What paths lead to happiness? From the ancient philosophers to cutting edge scientists, Haidt weaves a tapestry of the best and the brightest. His highly original work on elevation and awe–two long-neglected emotions–adds a new weave to that tapestry. A truly inspiring book.” -David M. Buss, author of The Evolution of Desire: Strategies of Human Mating “In this beautifully written book, Jonathan Haidt shows us the deep connection that exists between cutting-edge psychological research and the wisdom of the ancients. It is inspiring to see how much modern psychology informs life’s most central and persistent questions-Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less “In our quest for happiness, we must find a balance between modern science and ancient wisdom, between East and West, and between ‘left brain’ and ‘right brain.’ Jon Haidt has struck that balance perfectly, and in doing so has given us the most brilliant and lucid analysis of virtue and well-being in the entire literature of positive psychology. For the reader who seeks to understand happiness, my advice is: Begin with Haidt.”-Martin E.P. Seligman, Director, Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania and author of Authentic Happiness “Haidt is a fine guide on this journey between past and present, discussing the current complexities of psychological theory with clarity and humor. . . Haidt’s is an open-minded, robust look at philosophy, psychological fact and spiritual mystery, of scientific rationalism and the unknowable ephemeral – an honest inquiry that concludes that the best life is, perhaps, one lived in the balance of opposites.”-Bookpage

He says the quiet things out loud
June 20, 2021

I read three of Haidt’s books – “The Coddling of the American Mind”, “The Happiness Hypothesis” and “The Righteous Mind”. They all deal with moral choices, why they differ in different people and where they come from. I give all three books 2 stars, one extra for Haidt’s honesty in “saying the quiet things out loud”. They really say more about him personally than they do about any ground-breaking new insights into ethics or morality.

So who is this Jonathan Haidt anyway? He states repeatedly in his books that he grew up and remains a liberal Democrat. In fact, he states it so often that one suspects that he is trying to assure his liberal academic colleagues that although he tries to ‘explain’ conservatives’ moral choices based on his theories, he remains one of them. He was a speech writer for John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election that Kerry lost to George W. Bush. After experiencing the embarrassing losses of Kerry, Al Gore and Michael Dukakis Haidt set out to explain these losses using his theory of morality. Basically he divides all moral choices into six ‘foundations’ or ‘taste buds’: care/harm, fairness/cheating, loyalty/betrayal, authority/subversion, sanctity/degradation, and liberty/oppression. Liberals are supposedly driven primarily by the care/harm foundation and possibly by the liberty/oppression foundation but conservatives are driven by all six foundations. Hence, conservatives are at an advantage over liberals at least as far as making political arguments.

It is noteworthy that like other liberal academics describing behavior in the political sphere, Haidt seems only to offer negative examples of conservatives and Republicans. His favorite boogeyman is George W. Bush. There are repeated mocking, negative references to Bush and even an admission that at a political conference of like-minded liberals there was repeated snide, mocking comments about Bush and Reagan. It was also very revealing that in “The Righteous Mind” Haidt mentions that after 9/11 happened in a sudden spurt of patriotic feeling he wanted to place a U.S. flag decal on his car but then felt ashamed for having that feeling. So he compromised and justified the U.S. flag decal by also placing a U.N. flag decal on his car. He felt ASHAMED of his feeling patriotic after 9/11! He also tells us that whenever he saw any conservative bumper stickers on cars in the parking lot of the university where he taught in Virginia he just assumed they must belong to blue-collar workers or secretaries. His ‘awakening’ to the fact that not everyone had the same moral values as he had was a trip to India where he lived for a few months. There he found that people were actually religious and had different attitudes about sanctity, parental respect and the role of women. This seemed to come as great revelation to him. An interesting aside is the observation that even when discussing morality in the context of American politics liberal academics almost never mention negative examples of behavior by Democrats, say like Ted Kennedy at Chappaquiddick, a tabu subject apparently among liberal Democrats.

But according to Haidt humans in general are not primarily convinced of moral truths through reason, rationality and logic. Instead they are almost entirely driven by instincts and emotions. He has a central metaphor he keeps returning to of an elephant and a rider where the elephant, that is almost always in control, represents instincts or emotions (maybe corresponding to Freud’s Id). The rider represents conscious, rational thought. At first I thought he was referring to the distinction Kahneman makes in his “Thinking Fast and Slow”, but no, his elephant does not represent ‘thinking’ but the instincts that arise from Darwinian natural selection and genetics. They are inborn but in a way he does not describe, possibly influenced by environment. Now, I am always suspicious of these arguments through evolutionary biology or psychology because they are merely unprovable conjectures. They may sound plausible but plausibility is not proof. It’s like Jordan Peterson’s linking a built-in instinct for hierarchy to a behavior in lobsters. Sounds plausible but how seriously can we take it?

So Haidt is just the latest of a long list of psychologists and philosophers who try to mitigate the role of reason and rationality in human behavior by equating human to animal behavior. One thing that his theory can not explain and that he apparently did not consider is that perhaps the rider is often much stronger than the elephant and can make moral choices based on reason and logic and come to conclusions like: historically socialism often leads to totalitarianism, death and disaster; based on empirical evidence social welfare programs don’t usually have their intended outcomes; and effective political policies can be arrived at through observations of cause and effect, reason, rationality and logic.
