The riveting, pulse-pounding story of a year in the life of an emergency room doctor trying to steer his patients and colleagues through a crushing pandemic and a violent summer, amidst a healthcare system that seems determined to leave them behind The Emergency A Year of Healing and Heartbreak PDF

ONE OF NEWSWEEK’S MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022

As an emergency room doctor working on the rapid evaluation unit, Dr. Thomas Fisher has about three minutes to spend with the patients who come into the South Side of Chicago ward where he works before directing them to the next stage of their care. Bleeding: three minutes. Untreated wound that becomes life-threatening: three minutes. Kidney failure: three minutes. He examines his patients inside and out, touches their bodies, comforts and consoles them, and holds their hands on what is often the worst day of their lives. Like them, he grew up on the South Side; this is his community and he grinds day in and day out to heal them.

Through twenty years of clinical practice, time as a White House fellow, and work as a healthcare entrepreneur, Dr. Fisher has seen firsthand how our country’s healthcare system can reflect the worst of society: treating the poor as expendable in order to provide top-notch care to a few. In The Emergency, Fisher brings us through his shift, as he works with limited time and resources to treat incoming patients. And when he goes home, he remains haunted by what he sees throughout his day. The brutal wait times, the disconnect between hospital executives and policymakers and the people they’re supposed to serve, and the inaccessible solutions that could help his patients. To cope with the relentless onslaught exacerbated by the pandemic, Fisher begins writing letters to patients and colleagues—letters he will never send—explaining it all to them as best he can.

As fast-paced as an ER shift, The Emergency has all the elements that make doctors’ stories so compelling—the high stakes, the fascinating science and practice of medicine, the deep and fraught interactions between patients and doctors, the persistent contemplation of mortality. And, with the rare dual perspective of somebody who also has his hands deep in policy work, Fisher connects these human stories to the sometimes-cruel machinery of care. Beautifully written, vulnerable and deeply empathetic, The Emergency is a call for reform that offers a fresh vision of health care as a foundation of social justice.

Clearly not an easy problem to solve

April 13, 2022

Compelling stories, told in a manner that a non-med like me can understand. I know it’s far more complex of a problem that most people understand, and there is no way one book could even begin to convey the complexity, but this one gave me the inside scoop that brought it home. It encourages me to dig deeper and find out more. And it reminds me the system that is broken is the lake, and too often we still focus on the fish.

 Devastating, Beautiful, Essential

March 23, 2022

This book is a beautifully written account of the author’s experiences treating patients in a hospital on the South Side of Chicago. As observed by others, Dr. Fisher is part of a continuum that includes Orwell, Baldwin, Didion and Coates. He examines the difficult questions, hard truths and hypocrisies we all face, often in blunt and unsparing tones, but manages the difficult trick of doing so in a compelling and entertaining fashion. The effect is mesmerizing.
This is a book for the moment. It is for anyone who thinks about the big issues, appreciates insightful social commentary, or simply cares about the fate of America.

The Book Is Great, But The Title Is Misleading

April 26, 2022

This book does fulfill its promise to deliver on what happens in an emergency department during any time, but particularly during the Covid pandemic. It is, however, slightly misleading in that it portrays an African Americans point of view of the ER and of the problems in those departments.

He vents his frustrations (justifiably) on the wait times, the amount of time he is allowed to see a patient and his general frustration with the system overall. But this is a look at one ER in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Chicago and he knew that going in. Throughout the book are letters, whether they were sent or not is conjecture, but they explain to various patients why they went through the problems they had. It is compelling to read the difficulties that patients, including his own mother went through, but it isn’t great to portray the haves and have nots in one lump sum.

I live in South Carolina and the emergency room at my hospital sees many of the same issues with insurance, and who can and cannot pay for treatment, but I haven’t had the same experience. I have encountered wait times, but nothing like he describes. I am not a gold plated customer either. I think it is important to read this to see these problems exist, but not all hospitals with the same kind of patients have this problem. I understand his frustration and wish there were simple solutions, but there aren’t any.
